Kasper Schmeichel continues to deliver as Leicester look to keep place in top four

Leicester City have been decimated by injury problems in recent times but one ever present is Kasper Schmeichel who has been  superb for the Foxes this term, none less so than in the midweek draw at Burnley to preserve his side a point, something he has done on countless occasions this season.

The Midlands club are currently without Jonny Evans, James Justin, Harvey Barnes and James Maddison just to name a few but the levels of consistency which the Denmark international is showing week in, week out is astonishing and his form is keeping his side well in the race for the top four.

The 34-year-old has now made over 400 appearances for the club since his move to the King Power Stadium from Leeds United in 2011 which has to go down as one of the best pieces of business the club has ever done.

He has been an absolute rock in goal for the Foxes and is now on an incredible run of starting and completing the club’s last 102 Premier League matches, which just underlines how important he has been in the Foxes’ recent success which has seen them qualify for Europe and constantly following an upwards rise, year in, year out.

His form this season is particularly impressive given the amount of change he has seen in front of him. As well as the defenders who are currently out, Caglar Soyuncu, Wesley Fofana, Ricardo Pereira and Timothy Castange have all had lengthy spells on the sidelines of their own, making it a very unsettled defence for the Foxes’ captain to play behind.

Despite all the change due to the injuries, the 34-year-old has still been able to secure nine league clean sheets in 27 games, as well as making 73 saves to this point which makes it one of his best seasons since his move to the club.

Results have suffered as a result of the injuries in the past few games but the Danish goalkeeper has certainly still been one of the standout performers for Brendan Rodgers and the Dane staying in form will be vital between now and the end of the season if the Foxes are to finish the season in the top four.

As well as needing to keep his strong form for Leicester, he will be keen to have a fine end to the season to put him in the best possible shape to perform well for Denmark at this summer’s Euro’s which sees his country come up against Belgium, Russia and Finland in the group stage.

The Foxes’ boss has praised his goalkeeper after the draw at Burnley on Wednesday, labelling him as one of the very best at the top level.

“He’s been brilliant for me in my time here, there’s moments where it looks like it’s going to be a goal and he pulls off a save,” said Rodgers. “His concentration and his desire to stop the ball going in the net is so good.”

“He always produces for us, he’s absolutely outstanding when he had to be here. That’s why he’s one of the top keepers at this level.”

His goalkeeping skills have always been mightily impressive but the way in which he leads from the back is a big standout, and one which people are starting to notice a lot more, particularly with the absence of crowds which has made the more vocal players become more noticeable.

With the likes of Evans sidelined with injury, the need for a character like Schmeichel is all the more necessary and he continues to earn plaudits from all round the Premier League, and has been one of the top shot stoppers in the competition this season.

The Danish keeper can expect to be busy once more this evening as the Foxes travel to the South Coast to face Brighton who like to play their games on the front foot under Graham Potter.
