Could Paul Lambert’s time at Ipswich finally be up?

With only one win in their last five games, Ipswich look out of options and are stuck between a rock and a hard place, with fans calling for Lambert’s removal after dismal performances and results in the new year.

The frustration of fans calling for Lambert to leave the club has been coming for a long time, with the manager never truly challenging for promotion since he joined the club.

The Ipswich Town manager looks like he could be out of the door sooner rather than later after 10-man Ipswich drew 0-0 with Northampton Town on Tuesday night.

2018/19 season

Lambert has been manager of The Tractor Boys since October of 2018 where he took on the tough challenge of keeping Ipswich in the Championship. When Lambert became the Blues boss, he was very much taking over a sinking ship with the side struggling to perform and sitting bottom of the division.

Lambert failed to pull off what would’ve been a miracle in staying up in the 18/19 season as Ipswich finished the season rock bottom of the Championship, a whopping 14 points off survival. The frustration began to show amongst fans, as the Blues were relegated to the third tier for the first time since 1957. 

19/20 season

At the beginning of Lambert’s first full season in charge, the Ipswich side showed real promise of an immediate return to the Championship as they earned 14 points out of the first 18 available.

Town sat top of the League One table after August, with Lambert being awarded both a manager of the month award, as well as a new contract. He signed a new long-term deal, keeping him at the club until 2025.

The manager’s speedy start to the season was short lived however, as the Suffolk side fell off the pace in dramatic form. Ipswich finished the season in 11^th place, with fans beginning to call for Lambert to be removed from the club after after being in such a prime position to push for promotion.

20/21 season

With Coronavirus taking the world by storm, the 20/21 season has been anything but predictable for most teams. Disappointingly for Ipswich, their season has been very much predictable so far. The side have played passive football all season, a style of play that has further frustrated everyone around the club with the Blues currently in 11^th place, however they are only four points of play off places with a game in hand.

There is most certainly hope for Ipswich Town and the rest of their season but in the opinions of most, Paul Lambert does not have what it takes to push the club for playoff places.

Fans took a radical approach to calling for Lambert’s sacking this week, as the infamous ‘Blue Action Group’ called for the Ipswich hierarchy to ‘Save our season’ as they set off flares at Playford Road during a first team training session on Monday.

Former Ipswich and England striker Darren Bent had his say on the Ipswich season earlier this week, with the TalkSport pundit calling for change at the club via a tweet where he addressed the issues at his former side.

Ipswich take on high flying Oxford United on Saturday, with Lambert needing every point he can get in the chase for the play-offs and the hope of keeping his job. You can really feel the exasperation around the club right now, and if results don’t turn in the Blue’s favour soon then Lambert could very well be dismissed from the sinking ship that he joined over two years ago.
