A Callum Wilson brace shocks Everton at Goodison Park

 

Callum Wilson’s brace, earned a hard working Newcastle side their first win since December, as they came away with a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory against top four challengers Everton.

Having lost their last five league matches, the Magpies have ended the run of defeats with victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton side.

Two goals from Wilson sealed all three points for Newcastle in their dominant performance. After two more goals today Wilson has now contributed to 67% of Newcastle’s goals. A man who is going to be vital for Newcastle in the rest of the season.

A first half of very little opportunities saw the game scoreless at the break. Wilson had the best opportunity of the half as he found space in the box from a corner, but Everton’ goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was equal to his headed effort with an outstanding fingertip save tipping the ball onto the bar.

James Rodriguez went the closest for the hosts with Dominic Calvert-Lewin backheeling the ball into the Colombian’s path but Karl Darlow was able to make the save.

Newcastle who pressed Everton high all match had success, winning the ball high up the field, not allowing the Blues to dominate the game with their passing style.

The Magpies were close to taking the lead in the opening minutes of the second half as Ryan Fraser fed Wilson who found himself one on one with Pickford but he dragged his effort just wide of the far post.

With the hour mark approaching the game became end to end as Calvert-Lewin saw his effort pushed wide.

The deadlock was broken in the 73^rd minute from a corner, and it was third time lucky for Wilson who’s glanced header flew past a diving Pickford into the bottom corner to give Newcastle a deserved lead.

Despite falling behind, Everton pushed for an equaliser with Lucas Digne and Andre Gomes seeing their efforts blocked. Rodriguez was a bright spark for Everton pulling all the strings for his team.

In the second minute of injury time, Newcastle went from defending a corner at one end, to scoring at the other. Jamal Lewis broke away down the left, and he was able to find Wilson in the middle who had acres of space. He kept his composure and slotted the ball past the on rushing Pickford to grab his second of the game to secure the three points for Newcastle.

Having crossed the half way mark of the season Newcastle now find themselves level on points with Burnley in 15^th with the Clarets set to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The Toffees remain in seventh with the teams around them yet to play. They could see themselves drop to ninth if Chelsea and Arsenal win this weekend.

Newcastle will look to take the confidence from this win into their midweek clash at home to Crystal Palace. Whereas Everton will be hoping to get back to winning ways at Elland Road as they face a tough Leeds side managed by Marcelo Bielsa. The Blues are strong on the road, winning four of their last five.
