The Blades host Tottenham Hotspur at Bramall Lane and set their sights on getting back-to-back victories in the Premier League for the first time since July 2020.
Sheffield United currently sit bottom of the Premier League after only being able to muster up one win and two draws in 18 league matches.
They could have a chance of lifting themselves up into 19th-place, that’s if Wolverhampton Wanderers beat West Brom at the Molineux on Saturday afternoon.
The South Yorkshire side go into this fixture against Tottenham on a positive run of form that has seen them win back-to-back games, progressing to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup after beating Bristol Rovers 3-2 and beating Newcastle United 1-0.
The Magpies had the first chance of the game as Federico Fernandez’s cross saw Callum Wilson head the ball at goal with his effort wide of Aaron Ramsdale’s left post.
David McGoldrick had a chance to open the scoring at the other end. Good play between John Fleck, Ben Osborn and Ethan Ampadu saw the latter deliver a delightful ball into Newcastle’s box. The ex-Republic of Ireland international rose highest but saw his effort go over.
After receiving a yellow card in the 42nd minute, Ryan Fraser went on to earn himself a second yellow card after a challenge on McGoldrick which saw the midfielder sent off and his team play with ten men for the entirety of the second half.
Sheffield United enjoyed bright spells in the match as they looked to get ahead. Jayden Bogle had his shot saved by Karl Darlow after a lovely deliver from Osborn.
The Blades got the breakthrough they were looking for in the 73rd minute. Billy Sharp looked to get the better of Fernandez with the goal in sight. The Newcastle defender handled the ball in his box and after VAR review the penalty was given with Sharp slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.
Rhian Brewster could have scored his first Sheffield United goal after his shot from outside the box was deflected only for the youngster to see the ball bounce off the post and back into play. At last, the Blades were up and running in the Premier League with their first win of the season.
Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw against Fulham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with the Lilywhites having many chances, but the Cottagers capitalised on their opportunities and were able to get a point out of the game.
Sergio Reguilon had two good chances in the opening five minutes. The Tottenham full-back released his first shot which hit Joachim Andersen with his second effort going over the bar.
André-Frank Zambo Anguissa hit back for Fulham with a chance of his own. The midfielder turned away from Moussa Sissoko and then fired a shot at goal with Hugo Lloris being on hand to punch the ball away.
A minute later, the home side went up the other end and were unlucky not to score. Serge Aurier played the ball into the box with Heung-min Son arriving to attack the ball. The forward tapped the ball at goal with Alphonse Areola smothering the ball away.
Son was denied again by Areola after Tanguy Ndombele chipped the ball into the path of the South Korean with his header saved by the diving Frenchman.
Not long after Tottenham finally took the lead. A cross from the left side from Reguilon saw Harry Kane attack the ball and the diving Englishmen saw his effort hit the post and then back of the net.
In the second half, Son’s corner was punched away by Areola with Harry Winks gaining possession on the edge of the box. The Tottenham midfielder curled a shot at goal with the Fulham goalkeeper coming to his team’s aid once more.
Son had yet another fantastic chance after the Cottagers defence pushed up. Ndombele played the ball through into the path of the forward who saw his effort bounce out after hitting the post.
With 15 minutes to go, Fulham were able to get the equaliser. Antonee Robinson played the ball into Ademola Lookman with the substitute curling the ball onto the head of Ivan Cavaleiro who headed the ball past Lloris and into the back of the net.
With that draw, Spurs failed to move into the top three and that draw moved Fulham two points away from safety with two games in hand.
Tottenham have failed to win at Bramall Lane since the 1990 League Cup Fourth Round after the Lilywhites beat the Blades 2-0.
Since coming back up to the Premier League, Sheffield United have not tasted defeat against the London club getting a 1-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and then getting a fantastic 3-1 victory at Bramall Lane.
In a game that was dominated by Tottenham’s possession, the Blades were able to capitalise on their chances. Sander Berge opened the scoring for the home side on the half-hour mark which saw them up and running.
Lys Mousset scored Sheffield’s second with 20 minutes to go with Oli McBurnie tripling the lead for the hosts as they ran riot.
Harry Kane was able to get a late consolation goal for Jose Mourinho’s men but it was too little too late as the then newly-promoted Premier League side showed their class in front of goal and got the job done.
It will be interesting to see whether Chris Wilder’s men can cause an upset with their newfound form or whether Spurs can get the three points against the bottom side in the league.
