Callum Ilott ‘exceeded all expectations’ ahead of 2020 F2 Italian Grand Prix Feature Race

Callum Ilott believes he’s got a ‘good car and in a good position’ after qualifying on pole for the F2 Italian Grand Prix and is looking forward to the Feature Race.

Speaking exclusively to Prost International’s Adrian Kita, pole-sitter Callum Ilott,  second-place qualifier Yuki Tsunoda and third-place qualifier Luca Ghiotto all had their say on qualifying and looked ahead to the Feature Race.

Question for Callum Ilott- You lost the Driver’s Championship kead to Robert Shwartzman last weekend after scoring one point in Spa. How much has that motivated you to push in qualifying and looking further ahead to the remaining races in the F2 calendar?

“Obviously, I built myself a little bit of a gap ahead of the weekend in Belgium so that helped a lot after the points loss in Spa.”

“Here I wasn’t expecting massive amounts of speed in qualifying. I was looking for P3/P4 as a target so by getting P1 that really exceeded my expectations on that side and it’s an extra four points but we’ll have to see.”

“Similarily to Spa, anything can happen but I think we’ve got a good car and we are in a good position for the start.”

Question for Yuki Tsunoda- Only three-hundredths between yourself and pole. What do you think was missing from the perfect qualifying formula?

“The driving felt better for me when I was on the first set of softs compared to the second set.”

“I think the tow was a negative thing which affected my downforce which caused me massive amounts of understeer in sector two especially Turn Six and Turn Seven.”

“The lap was OK. I think we made some small mistakes but if Callum does a perfect lap and I do a perfect lap we will be the same margin behind.”

Question for Luca Ghiotto- First time you are inside the top three for qualifying since Budapest. How important will it be to potentially get a win at your home race?

“Well, fingers crossed first of all!”

“Yeah, it would be nice to get a win. Budapest was the best weekend by far this season and it will be nice to turn things around especially after the last few races not being great for me and especially being at the track that I love.”

“Silverstone last year was the best weekend to date whereas this year it was awful.”

“Even in Barcelona, I was no where near where I wanted to be this season compared to the last.”

“Monza is also one of them tracks that I love and hopefully I can do well in the races here and also looking forward to Mugello.”

“It’s always a good thing getting great results at your home races.”
