Late goal Son seals Tottenham win in Villa thriller

A goal from Heung-Min Son in added time boosted Tottenham’s Champions League chances in a game of many chances at Villa Park.

Having scored last gasp winners in their previous two games at Villa Park, Dean Smith’s men were on the receiving end of Son finish after a mistake from defender Bjorn Engels.

With the ball travelling towards the Belgian centre-back at relative pace, Engels let the ball roll under his foot to allow the South Korean in, who cooly opened his body and slotted past the impressive Pepe Reina to seal the points for Jose Mourinho’s team.

Villa had taken the lead on nine minutes when Toby Alderweireld, who celebrated the birth of his son during the week, failed to communicate with Hugo Lloris from an Anwar El Ghazi cross which culminated in the ball diverting off the defender and into the back of the net.

It was a game in which fortunes tipped regularly as on 27 minutes, Alderweireld redeemed his mistake by hitting a fire half-volley past Reina after Villa failed to clear a corner.

Added time of the first half would foreshadow the second as Son struck his first after VAR awarded Tottenham a penalty, Engels involved again as Spurs new boy Steven Bergwijn was adjudged to be fouled inside the box.

Son stepped up from the spot and saw his penalty initially saved, before the attacker reacted quickest to poke past Reina and give the Lilywhites a first half lead.

Tottenham looked vulnerable from set-pieces all day and on 53 minutes Jack Grealish’s corner found the head of Bjorn Engels, who just like his fellow Belgian defender Alderweireld, recovered from his earlier mistake to draw his team level.

Chances flourished throughout the match at Villa Park, with Dele Alli having two or three guilt-edged chances but failing to capitalise as the game was seemingly going to edge all-square.

Engels was the focus yet again however, his mistake presented Son the chance to seal his second with less than a minute to play.

Spurs climb to fifth with the win, Villa stay 17th.
