Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy.

On Wednesday morning, the club announced on their website that the Benfica midfielder will be heading to North London to become Jose Mourinho’s first signing :

‘”We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement for the 18-month loan of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica with an option to make the transfer permanent.’’

With the defeat against Liverpool and only one win in the in the past five league games, Jose Mourinho will be relying on the young prospect to spearhead a Spurs revival.

‘The special one’ will be hoping his first signing can replicate another young midfielder and loanee, whose recently made a good impression in North London. Despite the defeat to Liverpool, Giovani Lo Celso emerged a shining light and the feeling is he’s starting to settle to life in the Capital.

The 21-year old won the league with Benfica last season, in his first campaign at the top tier of Portuguese football. He played in the Lisbon club’s colours 53 times, finding the net on three occasions.

Fernandes shared his emotions with the club on his arrival:

“I’m very happy to be here today – I make my dream a reality. For me, it’s one big dream to come to this big Club.

“I will try to give my best for the Club every day, in every training session and in every game and I will try to help the team wherever I can, working hard every day for this shirt.”

With midfielders Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele injured and Christian Eriksen refusing to sign a contract extension and heavily rumours to be leaving this window, the opportunities present, may be Fernandes’ time to shine.
