Lomachenko secures points victory over Luke Campbell to add WBC strap to collection

Perhaps the definition of mastering the art form of Boxing, Vasiliy Lomachenko dazzled under the bright lights of the O2 Arena to beat Luke Campbell by unanimous decision.

“Hi-Tech” showed why he is well on the track become an all time great, displaying the art of boxing to perfection in an absorbing contest.

In a cagey start Luke Campbell began well, instantly getting to work on “the Matrix” body.

However, the pound-for-pound star was never going to go away. The O2 looked on in wonder as the Ukrainian twisted, turned, slipped and slid out the way of Campbell’s southpaw punches.

In the fifth round, ‘Loma’ made the breakthrough and hurt Campbell to the body at the end of the stanza.  But in a theme that ran throughout the contest, both refused to give ground. The Hull born Lightweight battled on and managed to momentarily stun the greatest fighter on the planet in the middle rounds. Campbell’s ploy of catching and countering to the body was fruitful and drew a large degree of success from it.

As the rounds ticked on, the admiration for Campbell grew as he continued to test the metal of Lomachenko. The Brit was calm and collected throughout, staying in his shape despite the relentless pressure of the Ukrainian.

Vasiliy Lomachenko’s quality prevailed in the championship rounds, putting down a weary Campbell in the penultimate round. The Brit took a knee and yet again sucked it up, bravely fighting on to hear the final bell.

In his second world title shot, Luke Campbell proved to everyone that he is World Champion material. Unfortunately for himself, he was in the ring and in the era of a once in the lifetime fighter.

Lomachenko claimed a points victory with the scorecards reading 119-109, 119-108, 119-108. The general consensus was the three judges had the contest unfairly wide and did not tell the tale of Luke Campbell’s monumental effort.

Vasiliy Lomachenko continues his quest for greatness whilst Luke Campbell re-starts his charge for another shot at World Title glory. As the fans leave the Arena and the sofa viewers switched off their televisions, each one of them knew they had witnessed an absorbing contest, enriched with pure boxing.

Povetkin UD PTS VS Hughie Fury

Meanwhile, in the chief support contest, Alexander Povetkin gained a unanimous decision victory over Hughie Fury. All three judges favoured the Russian’s aggressive, front foot style and scored it identically, 117-111.

Fury started well, utilising his height and reach to his advantage, However, the wiley veteran Povetkin managed to close the distance with short fire hooks and overhand rights. The 39-year-old pulled away in the later rounds and managed to return to winning ways after defeat to Anthony Joshua last time out.
