Manchester United captain, Ashley Young, is the latest footballer to be subjected to racial abuse on social media.
Users on Twitter abused Young during Manchester United’s 3-0 loss to Barcelona at the Nou camp.
Young is one of numerous players to have been subjected to abuse this season. Fellow Premier League stars Raheem Sterling and Mohamed Salah have also been subjected to racial abuse this campaign.
Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha has also been the subject of racial abuse on the social media platform when a user messaged him calling him a “diving monkey”.
Incidents have also cropped up in several football league matches with Derby County midfielder Duane Holmes and Bristol City defender Nathan Byrne recently abuse while playing for their clubs in the Championship.
The issue is occurring across Europe, with Juventus players Moise Kean and Blaise Matuidi also being abused in Serie A.
In an attempt to aid the battle, the Premier League recently launched the ‘No Room for Racism’ campaign. However, the issue still continues throughout the European game, with players and fans calling for stricter punishment on the perpetrators.
Manchester United are yet to issue a statement.
