10-Woman Trinidad Squeak Past Haiti

Sounders Women’s Own “Yaya” Kennya Cordner with the Winner for her Country, her first for TRI

by Dan Gaichas, Windy City Soccer in Bridgeview, IL.

BRIDGEVIEW, IL–Trinidad and Tobago got their qualification campaign back on track with a 1-0 win over Haiti in the first half of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship doubleheader at Toyota Park. Kennya Cordner got the game’s lone goal in the 37th minute on a cross from Ahkeela Mollon.

T&T goalkeeper Kimika Forbes, who made eight saves against the USA on Wednesday, became the second goalkeeper sent off in the competition for striking at Haiti’s Samantha Brand off the ball in the 63rd minute. She will miss Monday’s match against Guatemala. The match wound with five yellow cards and a combined 34 fouls in addition to Forbes’s red.

The closest Haiti came to an equalizer was in the 87th minute when a shot by Roselord Borgella was cleared off the line by Arin King. Earlier, a free kick by Wisline Dolce was pushed over the bar by Forbes.

Haiti, who now drop behind Trinidad and Tobago in Group A, will face the USA on Monday at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC at 3pm CT.
