The German Bundesliga title race is now neck and neck after Borussia Mönchengladbach triumphed in Friday night’s battle at the summit.

The side from the town on the Dutch border started the day four points behind the giants from the Bavarian city famous for its beer festival.

With the win, they rise to 36 points from 18 games, one behind Bayern and into second place.

Two other sides from  the same North Rhein-Westfalia province as Mönchengladbach, Schalke 04 and Dortmund are now third and fourth on 34 points.

They can also make 37 if Schalke04 beat 8th placed VfB Stuttgart tomorrow, and Dortmund win at 13th placed Hamburg on Sunday.

Marco Reus scored the first and Patrick Hermann the next two as Mönchengladbach raced into a 3-0 lead within 71 minutes.

Five minutes later Bastian Schweinsteiger scored what turned out to be a mere consolation for the beaten Bavarians.

Those four sides now have a five point lead over fifth placed Werder Bremen.
