San Jose Earthquakes 4-1 Portland Timbers
SAN JOSE, CA–Every good thing must come to an end, and for the Portland Timbers Saturday against a motivated San Jose side, this matchup brings the Rose City side back to a harsh reality.
Arriving at PayPal Stadium, the Portland Timbers (5-3-3, 18 points) were soaring high; however, reality came crashing down as they were missing several key players from their lineup.
With James Pantemis, Jimer Fory, Diego Chara, and Jonathan Rodriguez all sidelined, the Rose City team felt their absence throughout the entire match. Manager Neville had to include Bravo in the lineup, but he was not as effective in the backfield as usual.
The San Jose Earthquakes (4-6-1, 13 points) came ready to play. Cristian Espinosa had an outstanding game, scoring two goals in quick succession in the first half.
The Quakes took advantage of the Rose City defense’s weaknesses, exploiting gaps and turning the match into a nightmare for Portland’s defensive backfield.
Chicho Arango scored three minutes after Espinosa netted his brace to make it 3-0. Potland’s only goal came with Antony starting the play and passing to David Da Costa, serving a pass in the 42nd minute for the Timbers’ only goal scored by Felipe Mora.
In the end, despite Maxime Crepeau’s efforts to keep the Quakes from scoring, he was unable to prevent Osseni Bounda from netting the game-ending goal. The final score was 4-1 in favor of the Quakes.
