Vanarama National League: Match Day 25 Round-up of the teams from the North

With another exhilarating round of games in the National League, Northern teams experienced mixed fortunes in their fixtures as they get closer to the business end of the season.

Here is a review of how all of the Northern teams got on in Matchday 25 and the results that the sides recorded over the weekend.

Maidenhead United 1-0 FC Halifax Town

Halifax Town dropped to second in the league after a lacklustre defeat away to Maidenhead United. Halifax boss Pete Wild made four changes to the team that beat Alfreton Town in the FA Trophy last weekend.

It was Josh Kelly in the 29th minute who brought the Shaymen’s unbeaten run to an end and earned the hosts a 1-0 win. With the visit of promotion-chasing Boreham Wood on Tuesday night, who drew 1-1 at home to Weymouth, the key for Halifax will be to get back on track.

The Shaymen will have their work cut out to regain top spot from Chesterfield who also dropped points in a goalless draw at home to a stubborn Aldershot Town.

Yeovil Town 1-2 Wrexham

Phil Parkinson was a relieved man after his team came from behind to snatch victory over the Glovers at Huish Park in a controversial game.

Glovers midfielder Dale Gorman was down with a head injury but referee Sunny Gill allowed play to continue and leading scorer Paul Mullin scored with a stunning strike to bring the teams level just before the hour-mark.

Buoyed by Mullin’s goal, Wrexham pressed for the winner and it came in the 79th minute when Jordan Davies connected with substitute Liam McAlinden’s cross as his shot went in off the unlucky Morgan Williams.

Dagenham & Redbridge 0-2 Stockport County

County made it seven straight wins in a row as they continued their impressive winning streak and showed the rest of the league why they are serious contenders for promotion with a hard-fought win away to Dagenham & Redbridge.

Two goals in five minutes from Ash Palmer and Will Collar ended Dagenham’s unbeaten run at The Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Stockport are already looking to bolster their attacking options as they look certain to acquire the services of Salford City striker Tom Elliott who is out of contract in the summer.

Grimsby Town 1-2 Bromley

Grimsby now sit six points off the promotion places after a dismal performance at home to high-flying Bromley.
Jordan Maguire-Drew goal gave the Mariners the lead in the 23rd minute but they failed to hold on and were punished by George Alexander six minutes before the end of the first half.

Jude Arthur’s 83rd-minute header confirmed the loss for Grimsby as they continue their fall down the league table.

On a positive note, the stand out performers for Grimsby Town were Maguire-Drew and Carlisle United loanee Tristan Abrahams who had a lively debut and gave the home faithful something to cheer.

Sadly, Maguire-Drew was substituted at half-time but he was the Mariners’ best player in the opening 45 minutes. He was a constant problem down the right and Grimsby looked less balanced after he went off.

Altrincham Town 1-2 Torquay United

There was a delay to the start of the second half with the floodlights failing at the J Davidson Stadium but it could not stop Torquay United as they emerged in a thrilling encounter between the two sides.

The visitors took the lead after six minutes through the impressive Connor Lemonheigh-Evans before the Robins grabbed an equaliser on the half-hour mark through Toby Mullarkey.

At the half-time interval, the floodlights failed and there was a 10-minute to the start of the second half. However, it would have no effect on the outcome of the game and Torquay went ahead again through Stephen Wearne four minutes into the second period.

Indeed, Gary Johnson’s side deserved the win but Altrincham Town could have snatched a point in the dying moments only for Ryan Colclough to blast over the bar from close range.
