It was a brilliant second-half for the Warriors as a Jackson Hastings masterclass gave Wigan a much-needed third win on the bounce against Wakefield.
Warriors came into the tie with back to back wins over Huddersfield Giants, but Wigan Head Coach, Adrian Lam, was still wanting more from his side, and he got just that on Friday evening.
Tries from Jake Bibby, Liam Marshall and a first Warriors try for Joe Shorrocks ensured that the hosts maintained their winning streak as well as two points on the board.
It was a slow first-half from both sides with both defences coming out on top. Two tries from Bibby and a Hasting last-second drop-goal saw the home side lead 9-0 at the interval, but there was work to be done.
A blistering start to the second period for the Warriors saw an early try from Bibby to complete his hat-trick. This was closely followed by Joe Shorrocks going over with ease before Liam Marshall crossed the line to conclude the Warriors’ scoring.
Adrian Lam described it as the ‘best we’ve been all year’ and the Warriors fans appeared to share his thoughts as the 5555 fans that were in attendance were in full voice during the second-half.
As for Wakefield, they defended well in the first-half despite going in behind at the break, but they seemed to fall apart from when the second period got underway.
Trinity Head Coach Chris Chester was left frustrated by senior players making ‘individual errors’ which he thought cost his side on the night. The visitors did finish the game as the better side, scoring two tries through James Batchelor and Jay Pitts, but they would only be consolations as Wakefield slip to 10th in the Betfred Super League.
Warriors will be pleased with the victory and the confidence will be a huge bonus if they are going to kick on in the second half of the season after an injury-ridden start that has hugely affected results.
With Warrington up next, it will be interesting to see how the Warriors face up against a team higher up the table now they are back playing with momentum and confidence throughout the ranks.
