Dortmund look to continue winning form against VfL Wolfsburg

Dortmund will set their eyes on a win over Wolfsburg as they pile the pressure on defending champions Bayern Munich to slip up in the Bundesliga race.

Dortmund returned to the Bundesliga in style beating Schalke 4-0 in the Revierderby keeping up their unbeaten run of five and staying in second. Wolfsburg beat Augsburg 2-1 on their return to the Bundesliga and sit sixth in the league 11 points behing fifth placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Team news

Wolfsburg’s top scorer Wout Weghorst is available once again following suspension, although Josuha Guilavogui, William and Yannick Gerhardt are still short of fitness.

Jadon Sancho and Emre Can should come back into the starting line-up after regaining full fitness but Nico Schulz, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Marco Reus remain sidelined for Lucien Favre’s side.

Wolfsburg manager Oliver Glasner was more than happy to start of with a win on Wolfsburg’s return to the Bundesliga after a long break:

“After such a long break, we’re very happy to have started the last part of the season with a win. When you score the winner right at the end there’s perhaps a bit of luck involved, but I think we were the more dangerous team over the 90 minutes. We were a bit fortunate that their second goal was ruled out, but on the whole we controlled the game. I was particularly pleased with our reaction to Augsburg’s disallowed goal because we increased the pressure – Admir Mehmedi struck the post and had a late chance that was brilliantly saved by the Augsburg goalkeeper, so in the end we deserved the three points. We’re very happy about that.”

Borussia Dortmund manager Lucian Favre praised his side after a dominant 4-0 win over Schalke last weekend:

“It was a good performance from us. The result is deserved. We’re all very satisfied. You don’t know where you stand before the first game. That’s the case for every team.”

Head-to-head

In the last four meetings between the two clubs, Dortmund have been the dominant side gaining three victories from this fixture with the solitary draw coming back in January 2018.
