As Tottenham begin a new chapter under Mauricio Pochettino, Tom Hardy analyses the importance of the Argentine’s presence in attracting new signings to north London this summer.
It was just last April when Pochettino stated that Tottenham must “operate in a different way” in the coming summer transfer window as the Spurs boss sent out something of a large hint to chairman Daniel Levy.
Pochettino’s importance to Tottenham’s present and future cannot be understated. The coming season will be Spurs’ fourth consecutive foray in the Champions League, the last of course ending with defeat in the final to Liverpool just two months ago.
Currently the third-longest serving manager in the Premier League, having been at the Tottenham helm for over five years, Pochettino is now ready to replicate success on-the-field with the state-of-the-art stadium and training facilities built in recent years.
The first statement has already been made in the shape of Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.
Courted by many of Europe’s top clubs, Ndombele settled upon a move to north London and cited the way in which Pochettino spoke to him as a key factor.
“It is difficult to describe but he knows how to touch people, to leave a mark on people. He looked at me in the eyes and said: ‘Come with me, I am sure that you will progress. – Ndombele speaking to French newspaper L’Equipe
These words are common amongst Tottenham players. Captain Hugo Lloris is understood to adore the Argentine whilst Harry Winks only last week described Pochettino as “a fantastic coach but also a fantastic person”.
After over 500 days without a signing, the double announcement of Jack Clarke from Leeds, who will spend next season back on loan at the Yorkshire club, and Ndombele would have been a welcome relief to the Argentine.
But in reality, there isn’t much for the 47-year-old to worry about in terms of attracting new talent. With their brand new facilities, Champions League football and the Argentine’s supposed charm, new arrivals are now desperate to play for the Lilywhites perhaps more than their red north London neighbours.
With the touted arrivals of further enforcements such as Giovani Lo Celso, Dani Ceballos and Ryan Sessegnon, Tottenham could have all the tools to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool at the top.
By addressing their weakest in midfield, Pochettino now has replaced the irresistible Mousa Dembele and built a squad capable of matching his own ambitions.
The Spurs boss is clearly a manager that players are desperate to work with and with good reason as I’m sure Moussa Sissoko would vouch for after his upturn in form last campaign.
A squad capable of performing on all fronts is what Spurs fans have craved and Levy appears to have finally decided this is the time to back, in my opinion, Tottenham’s greatest ever manager of the Premier League era.
If Levy can get negotiations right (and not try and haggle over every pound) then Pochettino is sure to lure some of Europe’s best to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
And if things fall into place for the upcoming season, Spurs and Pochettino may not be trophy less for too much longer.
