Manchester City winger Bernardo Silva signs new three-year contract extension

Portuguese winger Bernardo Silva has committed himself to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City by signing a new three-year contract extension with the current Premier League champions.

This deal is said to be a reward for his consistent performances this season, the 24-year-old playing 40 times in all competitions scoring nine and assisting ten.

His most recent goal came in the Manchester-based club’s 7-0 thrashing of Bundesliga side Schalke, which saw City reach the last eight of the Champions League. He also got two assists on the night.

The winger only joined from AS Monaco two years ago for £43 million, this new deal signifying his importance to the team with the Lisbon born player tied down until the summer of 2025.

He is the fourth player to sign a new deal with his side, he joins Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte and Phil Foden in committing their long term future to City.

Silva had this to say about his new deal:

“It’s an honour to extend my deal with Manchester City, this club offers everything a player needs to fulfil their ambitions and there’s nowhere else I want to be.”

“As soon as I heard City wanted me to stay longer, my mind was made up. I love the club, the manager (Pep Guardiola), the players and the fans.”

“The style of football we play here excites me, and I am determined to win more trophies. City gives me the best chance of doing that.”

Since arriving in England, Silva has won the Carabao Cup and Premier League last season whilst adding a second Carabao Cup and a Community Shield to his honours so far this campaign.

City are also still on for the quadruple, topping the Premier League, winning the Carabao Cup and competing in the quarter-finals of both the Champions League and FA Cup, the only two trophies that City haven’t won under Guardiola.

City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain gave his opinion on the deal saying:

“Bernardo is an exceptional talent, so offering him a new deal and ensuring he spends the best years of his career with us was a very easy decision.”

“Under the guidance of Pep and the backroom staff we have here, we expect to see him develop into one of the world’s best players over the coming years.”

Silva won a league title and two cups in Portugal for SL Benfica before moving to England and also lifted the Ligue 1 title for AS Monaco the season before the now City player joined the club.

While the squad hasn’t been announced yet it is expected that the winger will be included in Fernando Santos’s Portugal squad for their Euro 2020 qualification games against Ukraine and Serbia later this month, as the 24-year-old looks to add to his 33 caps for his country.
