Lionel Messi’s first half brace leads Inter Miami to 2-1 victory over New England

FOXBOROUGH, MA– New England Revolution (6-6-8, 24 pts) were defeated 2-1 versus Inter Miami CF (10-5-3, 35 pts) on Wednesday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium to a crowd of 52,000.

The match kicked off with Inter Miami starting from the center circle. Luis Suárez played the ball backwards as Inter Miami elected to build out of the back to begin the match.

Baltasar Rodríguez had the first moment of the match when a freekick delivery from Lionel Messi fell kindly for Rodríguez, however, he sent his effort over the bar.

New England’s first chance came in the 6th minute when a free kick delivery from Carles Gil was headed on by Brandon Bye and was then cleared.

Luca Langoni had a chance in the 15th minute when Brayan Ceballos slipped him over the top for a chance, however, his effort was comfortably stopped by Óscar Ustari.

Luis Suárez had a massive chance when his effort in the 17th minute was deflected off of Mamadou Fofana and out for a corner kick.

The ensuing corner kick fell for Jordi Alba atop the penalty area and his effort just missed the top right corner.

Alhassan Yusuf had a chance of his own in the 20th minute when he drove down the center of the park and took a shot that was comfortably saved by Óscar Ustari in the middle of the goal.

Yusuf went down in the 22nd minute and received medical attention after holding his groin. He would continue to play in the match.

Luca Langoni had the best chance of the half for New England when Carles Gil had a fast break and laid him off into space. Langoni took a shot toward the bottom right corner of the net & it snuck just wide.

Entering the 26th minute, Inter Miami took the lead.

Following a header by Mamadou Fofana, the ball was headed by Tanner Beason and essentially gifted Lionel Messi a tap-in from 6-yards out to make it 1-0.

Lionel Messi had yet another chance to score in the 30th minute when he put his left footed effort just wide of the right post.

In the 33rd minute, Inter Miami CF midfielder Baltasar Rodríguez was issued a yellow card for delaying a quick restart after a foul on Brayan Ceballos.

Midfielder Sergio Busquets played an unbelievable through ball to Lionel Messi for his second goal of the match to make it 2-0 to Inter Miami.

Leo Campana had a chance of his own in the 45+1 minute, however, he blasted it at full power directly at goalkeeper Óscar Ustari. The ball was saved out for a corner kick.

Campana had yet another chance in the 45+2 minute but he sent his effort just wide of the net.

After the initial 45+3 minutes, the match entered halftime with Inter Miami ahead 2-0.

The second half kicked off with New England starting from the center circle as they swiftly looked to advance the ball into Inter Miami CF’s defensive third.

In the 50th minute, Revolution forward Leo Campana was issued a yellow card for a harsh foul on Maximiliano Falcon.

Inter Miami had two massive opportunities to score when a volley attempt by Tadeo Allende was blocked by Aljaž Ivačič and then the header by Luis Suárez was headed off the line by Peyton Miller.

In the 55th minute, Inter Miami midfielder Federico Redondo was issued a yellow card for hands to the face to Carles Gil.

Carles Gil had a chance in the 60th minute when he drove down the center of the park and took a left footed shot that went wide right of the net.

In the 62nd minute, both teams made changes. Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his first change of the match by replacing Tanner Beason with Tomás Chancalay. Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano made his first change of the match by replacing Baltasar Rodríguez with  Telasco Segovia.

New England had two spectacular chances to score when Leo Campana’s effort was saved by Óscar Ustari. The rebound fell for Tomás Chancalay and he shot it with the outside of the foot and missed the net.

In the 70th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his second change of the match by replacing Luca Langoni with Luis Díaz.

Luis Díaz had a breakaway chance in the 71st minute that he elected to shoot high. It was saved out for a corner kick by Óscar Ustari.

In the 74th minute, Inter Miami CF defender Maximiliano Falcon was issued a yellow card for a foul on Luis Díaz.

Less than a minute later, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his third change by replacing Brandon Bye with Maxi Urruti.

Entering the 79th minute, New England pulled one back.

Midfielder Carles Gil drove into space and took a right footed shot and put it past goalkeeper Óscar Ustari to make it 2-1.

Following the goal, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano made his second change of the match by replacing Tadeo Allende for Benjamin Cremaschi.

Luis Suárez had a massive chance in the 83rd minute when his scissor volley attempt was deflected just wide of the net out for a corner kick.

New England had yet another amazing chance in the 85th minute when a cross into the area was nearly own-goaled by defender Maximiliano Falcon. The ball was deflected out for a corner kick.

In the 87th minute, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano made his third and final change of the match by replacing Luis Suárez with David Martínez.

Lionel Messi had a massive chance to secure the hat trick, however, his left footed effort was blocked by Mamadou Fofana and cleared. If Fofana hadn’t blocked the shot, it was a definite goal.

New England had yet another massive chance when a low-driven delivery into the area by Maxi Urruti was met with a diving claim by goalkeeper Óscar Ustari.

After the 90+5 minutes, the match concluded with Inter Miami holding on for the 2-1 victory.

With the result, New England remain in 11th place in the MLS Eastern Conference.
