Not necessarily a bounce back for LAFC, but they will gladly take it.
LAFC actually came into Wednesday’s match with the Seattle Sounders on a five match unbeaten streak. However, only one of those five results was a win, and its last match had to have been a major letdown, as LAFC allowed the first place Vancouver Whitecaps to come back from a two-goal deficit and get the draw. Well on Wednesday night, LAFC made a statement of its own, as they again jumped out to the lead, but this time did not let up, as they went onto the 4-0 rout of the Sounders.
“We just try to win as many games as possible for now,” LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo said. “13 games into the season, now we’re starting to get comfortable, and that’s when you want to take off.”
Cengiz Ünder, Jeremy Ebobissie, Denis Bouanga and Yaw Yeboah found the back net for LAFC and keeper Hugo Lloris registered his fifth shutout of the season. Aside from getting back into the win column and stretching its unbeaten streak to five matches, LAFC carries some much-needed momentum into Sunday’s El Trafico matchup against the LA Galaxy.
LAFC broke open the scoring in the 26th minute in simple fashion. Denis Bouanga sent a corner kick into the penalty area, the Sounders cleared the ball out of the box, but it fell to the feel of Under, who then unleashed a powerful left-footed volley from about 24 yards out, the ball lasered through the crowd of LAFC and Seattle players and keeper Andrew Thomas could not make a play on the ball, as it deflected off him and into the back net to get LAFC on the board.
LAFC then took control of the match in the second half. Igor Jesus started LAFC’s march to a second goal on the defensive end, first by dispossessing Pedro De La Vega, then after receiving a pass from Under, played a perfect ball that got past Sounders defender Jonathan Bell and to Ebobissie’s feet. Ebobissie then dribbled into the penalty area, deked Bell to get himself open, then fired a right footed shot that got past a flat-footed Thomas into the back net to double the LAFC advantage. LAFC thought they had a third goal, as David Martinez scored in the 76th minute, but that goal was called back for an offsides call. LAFC did get that third goal in the 81st minute, and Martinez played a part in it, as he passed to an open Bouanga, who then dribbled down the left side into the penalty area, played a ball off Sounders defender Kim Kee-Hee and one-timed a left-footed shot past Thomas far post. LAFC capped off the scoring in the 86th minute, as Marky Delgado played Shane Palencia into the penalty area, Palencia played a ball to Olivier Giroud but marked heavily, chose to pass to Yeboah, who after dekeing Stuart Hawkins to the ground, fired a right-footed volley past Thomas into the back net.
“We wanted to start fast,” Ebobissie said. “I thought wa had some good pressing moments and some good opportunities in the first few minutes that didn’t bounce our way, but ultimately, the first goal did go our way, and we didn’t let up after that, so a complete performance.”
While the score was one-sided for LAFC, that did not mean Seattle didn’t have its chances in the match. The Sounders were especially aggressive in the first half, with its first chance coming in the 14th minute, as Danny Leyva had a free kick from about 25 yards out, Leyva’s free kick went off the LAFC wall, but just missed the back post. Seattle’s best chance at goal came in the 29th minute, as Leyva sent a corner kick into the penalty area, De La Vega headed a ball right at goal, but the ball bounced off the crossbar and LAFC eventually cleared the ball out. Seattle had one last good look in the 39th minute, as Leyva sent in another corner kick, Jesus Ferreira headed a ball right at goal, keeper Hugo Lloris stopped the header, temporarily spilled the ball back into play, but shielded by his teammates, managed to recollect the ball.
