Whitecaps stay top of the West with win over Rapids

Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 Colorado Rapids

VANCOUVER, BC–Vancouver Whitecaps kept top spot in the Western Conference with a 2-0 win over Colorado Rapids and stay two points clear of San Diego. Both goals came in the first half for the Whitecaps, the first in the 19th minute.

Tate Johnson sent a diagonal ball towards Sebastian Berhalter who then redirected to the feet of Brian White. White did not get all of the shot, but got enough to get it past Zack Steffen. In the 38th minute, Ali Ahmed’s thru-ball found Emmanuel Sabbi for his first goal in MLS and to double Vancouver’s advantage.

Colorado would fail to get a single shot on target all match to the Whitecaps’ five. The Whitecaps would have a third goal disallowed for offside in the 48th minute.

The Whitecaps travel to Mexico for the second leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal with Pumas on Wednesday night following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at BC Place. Kickoff is at 7:30pm PT (OneSoccer/FS1/TUDN/UniMas). The next league match for the Whitecaps will be on Saturday at home to Austin FC at 4:30pm PT (Apple TV). The Rapids host San Diego FC next Saturday at 7:30pm MT (Apple TV).
