DP Forward Giacomo Vrioni traded to CF Montréal for $50,000 in GAM

FOXBOROUGH, MA– New England Revolution have traded Designated Player forward Giacomo Vrioni to CF Montréal for $50,000 in General Allocation Money.

The move will open a senior roster slot & Designated Player slot for New England.

Giacomo Vrioni is a 26-year-old, 6’2, 187lb forward from San Severino Marche, Italy.

At the club level, Vrioni has played 238 career games (14,335 minutes) across Italy, Austria, the United States & now Canada. Vrioni began his career with Italian Serie D side Societa Sportiva Matelica Calcio 1921 (2014-15). He then signed for Serie A side Unione Calcio Sampdoria (2017-20). He never appeared for Sampdoria and was sent on loan on three different occasions. First to Serie C side FC Pistoiese SSD (2017-18), then to Serie B side Venezia FC (2018-19) and then to Serie B Side Associazione Sportiva Cittadella (2019-20). In 2020, Vrioni made a shock move to Serie A side Juventus FC (2020-22). He mainly played for the U23s and was sent on loan once to Austrian side WSG Tirol (2021-22). In the summer of 2022, Vrioni joined MLS side New England Revolution (2022-24) for a fee up to $4,000,000. He now joins MLS side CF Montreal.

Internationally, Vrioni represented Italy at the youth levels and then filed a one-time switch to represent Albania. He has made 6 senior appearances (161 minutes) for the Albanian Men’s National Team.

In total career numbers, the forward has contributed 75 career goals, 25 assists, along with 34 yellow cards and 1 red card.

Early Tuesday morning, Seth Macomber of the Blazing Musket had reported that forward Giacomo Vrioni had been traded to CF Montreal.

Less than three hours later, the New England Revolution confirmed that the deal was finalized & that Vrioni was to be traded for $50,000 in General Allocation Money.

New England also announced that they would retain a portion of his salary & retain a percentage of any future sell-on fee.

Vrioni, 26, departs New England after 2 seasons as the club’s Designated Player Forward.

In his 78 appearances for the club, he registered 22 goals, 4 assists, 8 yellow cards & 1 red card.

This trade opens a senior roster slot as well as a Designated Player slot for the New England Revolution.
