FOXBOROUGH, MA – The New England Revolution (6-1-10, 19 pts.) were victorious 2-1 over FC Cincinnati (12-3-4, 39 pts.) in an MLS match on Saturday night.

The match kicked off at TQL Stadium to a crowd of 25,513.

The team started their lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Aljaž Ivačič starting in net with a backline of (left back) DeJuan Jones, (center backs) Xavier Arreaga, and Dave Romney, along with (right back) Nick Lima. The midfield spots were manned by Ian Harkes (left defensive midfield) and Matt Polster (right defensive midfield), with Carles Gil appeared ahead of them (central attacking midfield). The forward roles were manned by Emmanuel Boateng (left wing), Esmir Bajraktarević (right wing), and Giacomo Vrioni as the lone striker.

Midfielder Carles Gil is making his 150th career MLS appearance.

Defender Brandon Bye appeared on the bench for the first time since tearing his ACL last season.

The match kicked off with FC Cincinatti starting from the center circle. They elected to build out of the back to start the match.

New England had the first chance of the match when Carles Gil’s freekick attempt entering the 11th minute went just high and wide of the right post.

Less than one minute later, FC Cincinatti had their first moment of the match when forward #22 Gerardo Valenzuela’s effort went wide of the right post.

FC Cincinatti had yet another chance just 4 minutes later when midfielder #23 Luca Orellano’s left-footed effort missed the right post by inches.

Entering the 21st minute, New England took the early lead.

Defender DeJuan Jones played the ball to the left flank to find Carles Gil. He then took 4 touches centrally and played the ball to forward Giacomo Vrioni, who then settled the ball, took one touch, and unleashed a low-driven left-footed rocket into the bottom left corner past goalkeeper #18 Roman Celentano for the 1-0 advantage.

In the 34th minute, FC Cincinnati midfielder #5 Obinna Nwobodo was issued a yellow card for fouling Ian Harkes.

FC Cincinatti’s next best chance came in the 35th minute when midfielder #5 Obinna Nwobodo unleashed a spectacular volley attempt from 25+ yards out that was met with a diving stop by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.

Entering the 41st minute, New England added to their lead.

Midfielder Carles Gil slid the ball through to find Emmanuel Boateng, who elected for a first-time cross into the area to find the head of Giacomo Vrioni for his second goal of the match.

FC Cincinatti’s last moment of the match came in the 44th minute when #20 Pavel Bucha’s volley effort went wide of the net.

In the 45+3 minute, FC Cincinnati defender #2 Alvas Powell was issued a yellow card for fouling DeJuan Jones.

After the first 45+4 minutes, the match entered halftime with New England ahead 2-0.

Prior to the start of the second half, FC Cincinatti head coach Pat Noonan made his first three changes of the match by replacing defender #2 Alvas Powell, forward #19 Kevin Kelsy, and forward #22 Gerardo Valenzuela with defender #4 Nick Haggland, forward #17 Sergio Santos, and forward #7 Yuya Kubo.

The second half kicked off with New England starting from the center circle and immediately launching the ball into FC Cincinatti’s defensive third.

In the 49th minute, FC Cincinnati forward #7 Yuya Kubo was issued a yellow card for fouling Xavier Arreaga.

FC Cincinatti had the first chance of the second half when midfielder #23 Luca Orellano’s corner kick delivery in the 51st minute was initially not cleared. The ball was shot on frame by midfielder #5 Obinna Nwobodo and saved by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič. The initial save then fell for defender #27 Yamil Asad, who slotted it into the net. However, Asad was clearly offside, and the scoreline remained 2-0.

In the 54th minute, FC Cincinnati defender #91 DeAndre Yedlin was issued a yellow card for dissent towards the center official.

Midfielder #23 Luca Orellano had yet another chance in the 59th minute that went just wide of the net.

In the 63rd minute, FC Cincinnati midfielder #23 Luca Orellano was issued a yellow card for blatantly kicking the ball towards the linesman after a whistle was blown by the center official.

Entering the 65th minute, FC Cincinatti pulled one back.

Following a corner kick delivery by midfielder #23 Luca Orellano, the ball was headed home by defender #27 Yamil Asad to make it 2-1.

In the 69th minute, FC Cincinnati midfielder #5 Obinna Nwobodo was issued a second yellow card and subsequently a red card for fouling Giacomo Vrioni. Due to this, FC Cincinatti would play the remaining 21 minutes with 10-men.

New England’s first chance of the second half came in the 73rd minute when Emmanuel Boateng’s shot was saved by goalkeeper #18 Roman Celentano.

In the 75th minute, FC Cincinatti head coach Pat Noonan made his fourth change of the match by replacing midfielder #27 Yamil Asad with defender #15 Bret Halsey.

In the 81st minute, Revolution forward Giacomo Vrioni was issued a yellow card for fouling midfielder #23 Luca Orellano. Revolution head coach Caleb Porter then made his final change of the match by replacing Emmanuel Boateng with Jonathan Mensah.

The ensuing freekick by midfielder #10 Lucho Acosta was deflected away for a corner kick.

New England’s next chance came in the 82nd minute when Esmir Bajraktarević’s effort was met with a palm save by goalkeeper #18 Roman Celentano.

In the 88th minute, FC Cincinatti head coach Pat Noonan made his final change of the match by replacing defender #32 Ian Murphy with forward #9 Aaron Boupendza. Revolution head coach Caleb Porter also made his final change of the match by replacing Carles Gil with Brandon Bye.

 

Entering the 89th minute, FC Cincinatti had yet another chance when midfielder #10 Lucho Acosta took on multiple defenders and unleashed a shot that went high over the net.

Just one minute later, in the 90th minute, FC Cincinatti defender #4 Nick Haggland attempted to tackle Esmir Bajraktarević and went down injured. He would not return to the match and FC Cincinatti would play the final 5 minutes with 9-men. After the match, it was reported that Haggland had broken his fibula and, “would be out months”.

FC Cincinatti had the last chance of the match in the 90+7 minute when midfielder #23 Luca Orellano had two chances to score that were cleared for corner kicks. The ball was cleared both times.

After the 90+6 minutes, the match concluded with New England holding on for the victory.

The Revolution are currently on a 4-game winning streak.

With the result, New England has moved out of last place and are up to 12th place in the MLS Eastern Conference. They are currently 2 points out of a playoff spot with 2 games in hand.
