Granada earn crucial win in relegation battle

The Nazaries picked up just their second La Liga win of the season as they beat relegation rivals Cadiz 2-0 at Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes.

Taking the lead against the lowest scorers in the league was of paramount importance to the struggling hosts, who hadn’t won a league game since August 2023.

Albanian winger Myrto Uzuni missed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the opening exchanges, directing the ball just wide of the target from just outside the six yard box.

The 28-year-old avenged this earlier miss by tapping home from close range off the back of a set piece move that saw Bryan Zaragoza deliver to the back post allowing Lucas Boye to divert the ball back across the six yard box where Uzuni was waiting to put the hosts ahead.

Cadiz thought they had a penalty on the stroke of half time after Augusto Batalla spilled an effort from Darwin Machis, prior to Ruben Alcaraz running across to pick up the loose ball and going down under a challenge from the Argentine goalkeeper.

However, VAR adjudged the contact to be minimal, and deemed there to be sufficient evidence to overturn the call.

VAR delivered a second sucker punch to Cadiz after the break as Ruben Sobrino was given a straight red card for lashing out at Gonzalo Villar in an off the ball incident.

The hosts killed the game off with a second goal in the 70th minute after Cadiz were caught short at the back post allowing Carlos Neva to find Zaragoza in acres of space to fire into an unguarded net.

The win, paired with Celta Vigo’s win over Betis sees Cadiz drop into the relegation zone with Granada, who are now five points from safety.
