Women’s World Cup Qualifiers: Five star display from Wales sees them brush Greece aside

A fine performance from Gemma Grainger’s Wales side saw them put Greece to the sword on a night of ferocious weather in Llanelli.

Goals from skipper Sophie Ingle, Kayleigh Green, Ceri Holland and Natasha Harding made it a comfortable night for the hosts despite the awful and stormy weather conditions.

Ingle’s early strike saw Wales relax and take the game to the visitors as Green doubled the lead after she capitalised on Greek defensive uncertainty in the 17th minute.

The energetic Green was a constant threat up front running the channels and asking questions which the visitors could not answer.

It came as no surprise when Holland fired home a third which, frankly, Anthi Papakonstantinou in the Greek goal should have prevented, but Grainger’s side continued their rampant as they looked to continue their unbeaten run in the Qualifiers.

The ferocious swirling rain could not dampen the spirits of the 4,065 people in the crowd as the second half saw Wales pick up from where they left off.

Holland scored her second of the evening in the 56th minute as a brilliant curling effort found the back of the net with Harding making it 5-0 with 25 minutes to go after a well-placed close-range header.

The victory continued Wales’ fine run of form but tougher tests lie ahead as Grainger’s side face mighty France in the next round of fixtures as they hope to secure a place at the Women’s World Cup in 2023.
