Mason Mount: From the Championship Play-Off Final to a Premier League star

Mason Mount, a midfielder that reads the game so well and can provide important goals and assists in times where his club need him to step up.

When Thomas Tuchel came in as the new Chelsea manager, the midfielder was dropped to the bench for the German’s first game in charge of the Blues and they went on to draw with Wolves in a goalless stalemate.

The 22-year-old has played three consecutive matches since and the London side have won every single of one them.

As every single youngster at Chelsea, the midfielder made his way through the youth ranks, getting valuable game time to get him in the right frame of mind for competitive football.

His loan move to Vitesse in the 2017/18 campaign was his first taste of men’s football and the youngster coped with it very well as he bagged eight goals and nine assists in 29 league appearances for the Eredivise side.

In 2018/19 Mount was loaned out again this time to the Championship with Deby County. Most fans were thinking that he was going to be another talent that spends his whole career out on loan and didn’t even get a chance in the first-team for the Blues.

But the move paid off for the midfielder. Not only was he managed by a Chelsea legend in Frank Lampard but he had another fantastic campaign. Eight goals and five assists in probably one of the toughest leagues in the world is no mean feat.

Derby made it to the Championship Play-Off Final, but were unable to win promotion to the Premier League as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa at Wembley.

All was not lost for the youngster as that summer none other than Frank Lampard was appointed Chelsea manager and Mount slotted right into the side, as a transfer embargo meant that the English manager was unable to spend money in the market.

Featuring in 37 matches in 2019/20, Mount managed seven Premier League goals and five assists as he completed his first Premier League season.

Being a young and up and coming midfielder is what many people keep an eye on. He continues to battle in the England setup alongside the likes of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and James Ward-Prowse among many other midfielders.

He has shown his quality time and time again throughout the last season or so that he can become a fantastic midfielder and not one that is just known for his passing ability but for one that can pop up with goals and assists.

In their visit to Sheffield United, most of the time, Mount would make intelligent runs forward and more or less play as a second striker alongside Giroud and when the Frenchman come off alongside Werner.

The pair combined for Chelsea’s first goal of the evening as the midfielder played a lovely ball through to the on running German. The give and go worked fantastically as United’s defence froze and were fixed on Werner the whole time.

The forward put the right speed and weight on the ball that it got through to the 22-year-old as he was in the middle of the box to tap in his tenth Premier League goal of his career.

Mount would have the least touches out of the midfield three of Chelsea (73), but those touches were crucial touches in the final third and ones that were key in creating attacks for the Blues.

As he looks to gain more and more experience in a Blues shirt, the change of manager didn’t come easy for him as he was instantly dropped by Tuchel.

The decided to allow the midfielder into the side and it has been lucky charm with Mount in the side. Three wins from three as Chelsea moved up to fifth, one point away from fourth Liverpool and 11 points away from league leaders Manchester City.

With Mount continuing to prove that he is growing and his development is on course, Tuchel will have a slight dilemma whether to get the midfielder to play a more advanced role as a centre-attacking midfielder or a standard centre-midfielder as the German continues to learn about his side.

Tuchel and his men need to brace themselves and continue their streak if they want to challenge for the top four this season.

Chelsea still have, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Leicester to play as they look to have a successful end to the season under the new stewardship of Tuchel.

Mount will be hoping he can feature in all the remaining matches as he continues to prove to be a crucial player for the London side.

Great performances for the midfielder will put him right in contention for the upcoming European Championships with England with the 22-year-old wanting to get ahead of his competition in the National setup.
