Neal Maupay’s 17th-minute strike was enough to see off Leeds United at Elland Road as Brighton take home all three points.
Brighton came away with a much-needed three points as they give themselves some breathing room between themselves and that bottom three despite playing a few more games.
A scintillating move was capped off by a Maupay tap-in at the far post as Leeds were carved open with ease and now fall to back to back defeats in the Premier League.
Leeds started the brighter of the two sides, Jack Harrison, who was making his 100th league start for the Whites, sent in a cross after just a few minutes but Brighton managed to clear away.
Mateusz Klich then had an effort from range for the home side but he could only see his effort sail high over the bar.
It was with Brighton’s first real attack of the game that they managed to open the scoring, a move which started deep in their own half as the ball was knocked around neatly in midfield before finding Alexis MacAllister on the right-hand-side who had the easy task of knocking the ball across goal and Maupay was on hand to tap into an open goal.
This goal really seemed to get Brighton going and soon after, forward Leandro Trossard picked up the ball and drove at the Leeds defence before smashing an effort towards goal which he could only see deflected onto the post.
The home side did manage to get control of the ball again but this was all they could do as they dominated the ball but with very little attacking prowess and Brighton would be reasonably comfortable as they went into half-time.
Seagulls manager Graham Potter would have wanted to see a similar performance in the second half from his side and he got exactly that, even despite Harrison spurning a chance wide for Leeds right after half time.
Potter’s side made it difficult for Brighton as they struggled to create any real clear-cut opportunities through the half and held their opponents to just two shots on target as they managed to hold on comfortably to take home the three points.
This result would be a welcome one for Brighton as they are currently flirting with the prospect of relegation but this win has given them that little bit of breathing space they would have hoped for.
