Someone not named Robert Lewandowski scored five goals, Bayern back to winning, and leaders win. This and more in the Bundesliga Week 8 recap.
Hard to start anywhere other than Frankfurt when you have the most goals in a Bundesliga match this season. Eintracht on Friday’s profile match put seven past now bottom Fortuna Dusseldorf, 7-1, on the return of former Eagle coach Fredheim Funkel.
Fans welcomed their former coach who gave back stability to their club within the Bundesliga, but Adi Hutter was the man whose plan came to fruition. After VAR noticed a penalty in the box, Sebastian Haller put the shot in the net and the rout was on. On the first of his five goals, the most by a Frankfurt player in the Bundesliga in a single match, Luka Jovic scored on an acrobatic twist in midair to put the hosts up 2-0. A second in the first half for Jovic had the team flying. Haller added his second as Jovic found three more in the second half. Alfredo Morales’ side found a consolation goal in a thrashing that will hurt for a while.
Bayern Munich had a weird press day prior to the match with Wolfsburg and it seemed that manager Niko Kovac had a plan that was better than anything the Wolves could throw back in a 3-1 win.
Lewandowski put two goals in the net before a weird second yellow was issued to Arjen Robben. Funny thing is that Bayern took on the challenge well. Sure giving up a goal to Wolfsburg could be anticipated, but a third goal was found from James Rodriguez. A midweek visit Champions League visit to Athens to play champions AEK is next and collective wisdom says that the Bavarian’s will win in Greece.
Borussia Dortmund helped the new era at Stuttgart under Marcus Weinzerl get off to a poor start in a 4-0 beatdown that honestly wasn’t even that close.
The visitors, planning for midweek Champions League action against Athletico Madrid, rotated the squad just a little bit and yet Stuttgart had no way to cope. Three first half goals from Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus, and Paco Alcacer within the first 25 minutes put the match well out of reach. This win keeps Dortmund top in the Bundesliga and things are golden for the Yellow and Black.
Werder Bremen visited Gelsinkirchen to play Schalke and the Green and White showed why they deserve to play in Europe next season with a 2-0 away win.
It was the Maximillian Eggestein show as the Bremen youth product put away both goals for the Green and White. Even if Schalke had an eye on playing Galatasaray in the Champions League, the Weser side team was way better. Summer signing Davy Klassen has been briliant and his positioning sets up the attack better than the now sold Thomas Delaney. There’s a bench that can be called on, including the hype machine surrounding American Josh Sergeant, in the back pocket of manager Florian Kohfeldt. Things are moving and this club is on the rise.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga:
Mainz played timid and the Foals of Borussia Monchengladbach took advantage as they put four in the net. BMG now sits comfortably in second and Mainz, while still mid-table, can see the teams at the bottom with only three points difference.
Hertha Berlin dropped to sixth in the table as they played SC Freiburg to a 1-1 draw. Berlin will still tell themselves that only four points separate themselves from the top, but Freiburg will take this result as they move further from the relegation side of the table into 11th.
RB Leipzig will be kicking themselves as they played out to a 0-0 draw away to FC Augsburg. Maybe an eye was toward the Thursday Europa League match with Glasgow Celtic, but multiple opportunities were not converted. Still, treading water at fifth isn’t too bad and neither is ninth for Augsburg.
Hoffenheim’s visit to Nurnberg was better than that for other clubs this season as they won 3-1. Champions League play against Lyon looms, but the three points puts Julian Naglesmann’s side into eighth which isn’t too bad when juggling multiple competitions.
Bayer Leverkusen played an exciting 2-2 draw with visitors Hannover 96. Averaging one point a match isn’t enough for Leverkusen as Europa League play at Zurich looms Thursday. Also, being up a player for over 30 minutes and only getting a late equalizer isn’t good enough for this club in the long term.
POTW: When you score five goals in a single match nobody else will earn the honors. Luka Jovic is in the form of his life and Frankfurt has now won four straight in all competition. Frankfurt will be triggering the buyout clause in the loan contract to be sure.
