France Advances Behind Mbappé Brace, Barcola Goal

East Rutherford, NJ – The France National Team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Sweden in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match on Tuesday afternoon.

The match kicked off at MetLife Stadium to a crowd of 80,000.

The match kicked off with Sweden immediately launching the ball into France’s defensive third, looking to pin their opponents back and establish an early foothold in the match.

Alexander Isak had the first chance of the match for Sweden in the 3rd minute when his effort inside the box was saved by goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Lucas Digne had France’s first effort of the match in the 15th minute when his long distant effort was saved by goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström.

Just two minutes later, Kylian Mbappé had a long distant effort of his own that was saved once more in the bottom corner by goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström.

France thought they took the lead in the 20th minute when Kylian Mbappé got in-behind and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström, however, Mbappé was deemed to be offside.

Alexander Isak had a moment to give Sweden the advantage in the 27th minute when his effort from inside the box missed just to the right of the net.

Kylian Mbappé had a massive chance to take the lead for France in the 32nd minute when his right footed shot inside the penalty area struck the left post.

Less than 5 minutes later, Michael Olise had yet another amazing chance when his left footed effort from the center of the box also struck the left post.

Entering the 45th minute, France took the lead.

Forward Ousmane Dembélé played a through ball into the box for Kylian Mbappé, who split two defenders before slotting his finish into the top-right corner to give France a 1-0 lead.

After the initial 45+4 minutes, the match entered halftime with France leading 1-0.

The second half kicked off with France immediately launching the ball into Sweden defensive third, looking to pin their opponents back and establish an early foothold in the match.

Aurélien Tchouaméni had France’s first chance of the second half in the 50th minute when his right footed shot from outside the box was sent high over the bar.

Entering the 52nd minute, France added to their lead.

Forward Michael Olise found Bradley Barcola making a run into the box, where he slotted a right-footed shot into the top-left corner to double France’s lead.

Sweden’s first chance of the second half came in the 56th minute, when Lucas Bergvall headed a corner-kick delivery wide of the net.

Jules Koundé had the next chance for France just two minutes later when his right footed effort from close range was comfortably claimed by goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström.

Michael Olise had another chance in the 61st minute when his right footed effort towards goal forced a save by goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström.

Olise had yet another amazing chance to score in the 64th minute when his left footed effort was saved out for a corner kick by goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström.

Following the shot, Sweden head coach Graham Potter made his first two changes of the match by replacing Elliot Stroud & Lucas Bergvall with Besfort Zeneli & Taha Ali.

Less than a minute later, Dayot Upamecano had a volley attempt inside the penalty area that was blocked away and cleared.

Michael Olise had a clear chance to score in the 71st minute when Kylian Mbappé played him through for a one-on-one opportunity with goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström, but Zetterström denied Olise.

Entering the 74th minute, France added to their lead.

Forward Michael Olise played Kylian Mbappé in behind, and the France captain finished with a right-footed strike into the top-right corner to give France a 3-0 lead.

Following the goal, France head coach Didier Deschamps made his first two changes of the match by replacing Ousmane Dembélé & Jules Koundé with Désiré Doué & Malo Gusto.

France had two chances to score in the 75th minute, first when Désiré Doué played a ball centrally toward Kylian Mbappé, only for the pass to be intercepted inside the box and cleared.

In the 77th minute, France head coach Didier Deschamps made his third change by replacing Lucas Digne with Theo Hernández.

Alexander Isak had a chance to score in the 81st minute when a ball was played centrally toward him, but his effort was claimed by Mike Maignan.

Less than a minute later, Sweden head coach Graham Potter made two more changes, replacing Anthony Daniel Svenssen and Yasin Ayari with Benjamin Nygren and Mattias Svanberg.

In the 84th minute, France head coach Didier Deschamps made his first two changes of the match by replacing Michael Olise & Kylian Mbappé with Rayan Cherki & Jean-Phillipe Mateta.

Viktor Gyökeres had an unbelievable chance to score in the 89th minute when his effort from the center of the box was saved in the bottom corner by goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Less than a minute later, Sweden head coach Graham Potter made his final change of the match by replacing Alexander Isak with Gustaf Nilsson.

Jean Phillipe-Mateta had the final chance of the match in the 90+2 minute when his effort was sent just over the bar.

After 90+4 minutes, the match concluded in a 3-0 victory for France.

Sweden have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
