Ødegaard Cancels Out Díaz Strike as Norway Draw Morocco 1-1

HARRISON, NJ –The Morocco National Team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Norway National Team in its final Road to 26 international friendly on Sunday afternoon.

The match kicked off at Sports Illustrated Stadium to a sold-out crowd of 24,902.

Kickoff between Morocco & Norway.

The match kicked off with Morocco immediately sending the ball into the far-right corner of the field and out for a throw-in.

Morocco had the first chance of the match in just the 2nd minute when Brahim Díaz’s cut-back attempt was cleared away.

Abde Ezzalzouli had a massive chance to score in the 5th minute when his shot from inside the six-yard box was deflected behind for a corner kick.

Less than a minute later, Abde Ezzalzouli had another chance, but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

Entering the 8th minute, Morocco took the lead.

Midfielder Abde Ezzalzouli found forward Brahim Díaz just outside the box, where he teed up a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner to give Morocco a 1-0 lead.

Norway’s first major chance came in the 13th minute when a corner-kick delivery from Martin Ødegaard was headed just wide of the net by Alexander Sørloth.

Norway thought they had leveled the score in the 16th minute when Alexander Sørloth beat two defenders and found the back of the net. However, referee Pierre-Luc Lauzière ruled that Sørloth had committed a foul on Noussair Mazraoui in the buildup, and Morocco were awarded a free kick.

Morocco’s next chance came just two minutes later when Abde Ezzalzouli’s effort from the left flank narrowly missed the bottom-left corner.

Julian Ryerson created a chance for Norway in the 23rd minute when his cross toward the back post was chested out of play by a Moroccan defender.

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi made the game’s first substitution in the 29th minute, bringing on Youssef Belammari for the injured Noussair Mazraoui.

Norway thought they might be awarded a penalty kick in the 34th minute when a back-post delivery from Julian Ryerson appeared to strike a Moroccan defender Issa Diop’s hand while heading toward Erling Haaland. The Norwegian players appealed, but the referee waved play on and awarded a corner kick instead.

Achraf Hakimi had a chance of his own just two minutes later, unleashing an effort from distance that forced an awkward save from goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland. The loose ball was then cleared out for a throw-in.

In the 39th minute, Norway defender Julian Ryerson was shown a yellow card for a harsh foul on Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Abde Ezzalzouli had an effort towards goal from the left side of the box in the 42nd minute that was deflected away and cleared.

Norway had two massive chances in the 45th minute when an initial effort from Antonio Nusa forced a save from Yassine Bounou. The rebound then fell to Erling Haaland, whose close-range attempt from just two yards out was blocked away by Youssef Belammari for a corner kick.

Less than a minute later, Ismaël Saibari tested Ørjan Nyland with a right-footed shot from outside the box, but the goalkeeper made a save in the bottom-right corner.

After the initial 45+4 minutes, the match entered halftime with Morocco ahead 1-0.

Prior to the start of the second half, both teams made changes. Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi replaced Ayoub Bouaddi & Abde Ezzalzouli with Sofyan Amrabat & Soufiane Rahimi, while Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken introduced Andreas Schjelderup in place of Antonio Nusa.

The second half kicked off with Norway immediately sending the ball into Morocco’s defensive third.

Brahim Díaz had Morocco’s first chance of the second half in the 57th minute when his right-footed effort from outside the box forced a strong save from goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

Morocco had another chance less than a minute later when Neil El Aynaoui fired over the crossbar from six yards out.

Alexander Sørloth had a chance for Norway just three minutes later, but his effort was blocked and cleared away by the Moroccan defense.

In the 64th minute, Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi made a series of substitutions, replacing Issa Diop, Chadi Riad, Azzedine Ounahi, Neil El Aynaoui, Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Díaz, and Ismaël Saibari with Marwane Saadane, Redouane Halhal, Bilal El Khannouss, Samir El Mourabet, Zakaria El Ouahdi, Ayoube Amaimouni, and Ayoub El Kaabi.

During the cooling break, Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken made a series of substitutions, replacing Sander Berge, Kristoffer Ajer, David Møller Wolfe, Erling Haaland, Alexander Sørloth, Ørjan Nyland, and Fredrik Aursnes with Oscar Bobb, Fredrik Bjørkan, Leo Østigård, Jørgen Strand Larsen, Thelo Aasgaard, Egil Selvik, and Patrick Berg.

Jørgen Strand Larsen had a chance to put Norway ahead in the 74th minute, but his effort on goal was blocked behind for a corner kick.

Entering the 75th minute, Norway leveled the scoreline.

Midfielder Oscar Bobb found Martin Ødegaard inside the box, and the Norwegian captain calmly slotted a left-footed finish into the bottom corner to level the match at 1-1.

Norway captain Martin Ødegaard was substituted in the 80th minute, with Kristian Thorstvedt entering the match in his place.

Two minutes later, Morocco midfielder Bilal El Khannouss a yellow card for a foul on Kristian Thorstvedt.

Norway had another chance towards goal less than a minute later when an effort towards goal by Andreas Schjelderup was blocked away by Soufiane Rahimi for a corner kick.

Morocco’s next chance came in the 89th minute when a corner kick delivery found Ayoube Amaimouni inside the box, but his first-time effort sailed over the crossbar.

After the 90 minutes, the match concluded in a 1-1 draw.
