Gotham blitzed by Current, drop third straight

Gotham FC 1-2 Kansas City Current

HARRISON, NJ–Two goals in the first eleven minutes was enough for the league-leading Kansas City Current to defeat Gotham FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday. It is the third straight loss for Gotham and they remain tenth while the Current maintain a five-point advantage at the top of the NWSL.

Things got off inauspiciously for Gotham as Emily Sonnett’s attempt to play the ball out of the back was intercepted by Temwa Chawinga who left the ball for Michelle Cooper for an easy finish. Eight minutes later, The roles were reversed after Vanessa DiBernardo was able to pick out Cooper on the flank and Cooper would fed Chawinga for an easy finish to double Kansas City’s advantage.

Gotham thought they had pulled one back on two different occasions, but VAR would say otherwise. Sonnett thought she had pulled one back in the 49th minute, but VAR would rule the goal out for a foul by Sonnett on Claire Hutton. Esther thought she had a goal in the 6t1st minute, but VAR would determine if there was offside in the buildup.

They finally got one in the 11th minute of second half stoppage time, ironically though a stroke of luck. Geyse’s cross was accidentally knocked in by Vanessa DiBernardo–playing in her 200th match in the NWSL. Unfortunately for Gotham, they could not get any closer and it was three more points for the Current.

Gotham’s next match will be on Friday night at Utah Royals. Kickoff is at 9:30pm ET on Prime. The Current will host Racing Louisville on Saturday at 6:30pm CT on Ion.
