Soccer on the Sound: Defiance move on in US Open Cup

Tacoma Defiance 2-1 Oakland Roots (aet)

TUKWILA, WA–Tacoma Defiance needed extra time to defeat Oakland Roots of the USL Championship, 2-1, to move on to the fourth round of the US Open Cup. It extends their unbeaten streak at Starfire Sports Complex to fifteen matches in all competitions.

Peter Kingston opened the scoring in the 28th minute off a free kick putting Tacoma ahead. Neveal Hackshaw equalized for the Roots from the penalty spot in the 75th minute. The match went to extra time. In the 108th minute, Jackson Khoury set up Osaze De Rosario for a shot that deflected into the right side of the net.

The Defiance will now host Portland Timbers at Starfire on Tuesday, May 6th. Kickoff is at 7pm PT on CBS Sports Network and Paramount+. Before that, the Defiance return to MLS NEXT Pro play on Wednesday at Sporting Kansas City 2 (6pm, Apple TV).
