Colorado Rapids 1-1 San Jose Earthquakes
COMMERCE CITY, CO–The Rapids missed out on a chance to consolidate their playoff position with a 1-1 draw against San Jose Earthquakes, who remain fourth in the West with Houston drawing at Minnesota and their unbeaten run extended to seven (3-0-4). The Raids remain eighth in the West, but could fall to ninth after Sunday should LA Galaxy defeat St. Louis. The Rapids’ home unbeaten streak in league play does extend to eight matches.
San Jose thought they had taken the lead in the 12th minute through Preston Judd, but VAR determined that the was just across the center line in an offside position as the ball was played to him disallowing the goal. The Rapids did take the lead on 27 minutes. Donovan Phillip rose above everybody to head in Paxten Aaronson’s corner kick.
Colorado looked to extend their lead, but were stymied by missed chances and saves by Earl Edwards Jr. The Quakes then came up with an equalizer in the 57th minute. Timo Werner sent a free kick into the box. Ronaldo Vieira headed in the path of Dave Romney who blasted the ball past a crowd of players and into the net.
The Rapids had to two late chances to get a winner. Wayne Frederick headed one off the post and then Darren Yapi was denied by Edwards, who made nine saves on the night and preserved a point for the Quakes.
Next Saturday, the Rapids host Minnesota United (7:30pm MT, Apple TV), while San Jose travel to Real Salt Lake (7:30pm MT, Apple TV).
