Revolution II Comeback Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to Philadelphia Union II

SMITHFIELD, RI– New England Revolution II (11-6-5, 42 pts) were defeated 4-3 versus Philadelphia Union 2 (8-4-10, 30 pts.). on Sunday afternoon.

The match kicked off at 7:00 p.m. ET at Beirne Stadium.

The match kicked off with Philadelphia Union II starting from the center circle and immediately looking to advance the ball into New England’s defensive third.

Stas Korzeniowski recorded the first shot of the match for Philadelphia in the third minute, sending a right-footed effort over the crossbar.

Philadelphia created another dangerous opportunity in the sixth minute when an effort at the back post by Malik Jakupovic was denied by New England goalkeeper Max Weinstein.

Two minutes later, New England Revolution II head coach Pablo Moreira was forced into his first change of the match, replacing the injured Keegan Hughes with Levi Katsell.

Philadelphia’s early pressure eventually paid off in the tenth minute when Union II took the lead.

Following a corner kick into the area, the ensuing delivery was headed past goalkeeper Max Weinstein by Jordan Griffin to give Philadelphia Union II the lead.

In the 10th minute, New England Revolution II midfielder Carlos Zambrano was issued a yellow card for a harsh foul.

New England responded with a chance of its own in the 13th minute when Levi Katsell fired an effort toward goal that was saved and pushed behind for a corner kick.

In the 15th minute, New England found the equalizer to level the scoreline.

Midfielder Logan Azar found Makai Wells on the left side of the pitch, who then delivered a ball into the center of the box for Myles Morgan to finish from close range and level the match at 1-1.

Cristiano Oliveira had the next opportunity for New England just two minutes later, sending his right-footed effort wide of the left post.

New England threatened again in the 22nd minute when forward Makai Wells sent his effort wide of the left post.

Kellan LeBlanc had the next chance for Philadelphia in the 25th minute, sending a left-footed shot from the right side of the box wide of the net.

Less than a minute later, Philadelphia Union II forward Stas Korzeniowski was issued a yellow card for a harsh foul.

Myles Morgan had a massive opportunity to give New England the lead in the 27th minute after breaking free on a fast break, but his effort was denied by goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook.

Less than a minute later, Philadelphia capitalized at the other end to retake the lead.

Midfielder Malik Jakupovic found Stas Korzeniowski, who then played the ball to Kellan LeBlanc on the right flank. LeBlanc drove forward before slotting his effort past goalkeeper Max Weinstein and into the top-left corner of the net to give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead.

In the 32nd minute, play was stopped following a gruesome challenge on Revolution II midfielder Carlos Zambrano. The injury appeared serious, with play halted for approximately 15 minutes as Zambrano received medical attention.

No card was issued to the Union II player for the challenge, while Revolution II head coach Pablo Moreira and forward Makai Wells were both shown yellow cards in the aftermath.

Following the lengthy stoppage, Zambrano was unable to continue & ultimately will be transported to local hospital. He was replaced by Aarin Prajapati.

In the 45+4 minute, Wells was issued his second yellow card of the match, reducing New England to 10 men for the remainder of the contest.

Despite being down a man, New England continued to create opportunities. Myles Morgan had the next chance in the 45+8 minute, but his effort toward goal was saved.

New England threatened again moments later, with efforts from Matthew Jean Baptiste and Levi Katsell blocked and saved, respectively.

In the 45+12 minute, Philadelphia Union II head coach made his first change by replacing Rafael Uzcategui with Isaiah Mendoza.

In the 45+13 minute, Philadelphia Union II midfielder Isaiah Mendoza was issued a yellow card.

Two minutes later, New England’s sustained pressure paid off as Revolution II found the equalizer to level the match.

Following a service into the area by Levi Katsell, the ball was headed in by forward Cristiano Oliveira to make it 2-2.

Less than two minutes later, Philadelphia Union II regained the lead.

After a centered pass that was deflected, midfielder Kellen LeBlanc slotted a low-driven shot that snuck past goalkeeper Max Weinstein to give Philadelphia the 3-2 advantage.

After the initial 45+20 minutes, the match entered halftime with Philadelphia ahead 3-2.

The second half began with New England looking to immediately push forward, launching the ball into Philadelphia Union II’s defensive third.

Cristiano Oliveira recorded the first effort of the half just one minute after the restart, firing a left-footed shot that was deflected behind for a corner kick.

Less than a minute later, Gabe Dahlin and Myles Morgan both had efforts toward goal deflected and cleared by the Philadelphia defense.

Morgan threatened again in the 49th minute, but his effort was blocked by Finn Sundstrom.

In the 53rd minute, Philadelphia Union II made its second change of the match, replacing Matheus De Paula with Oliver Pratt.

New England had a massive chance to level the scoreline in the 55th minute when a service into the area from Matthew Jean Baptiste found Myles Morgan, whose close-range effort was denied by goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook.

Myles Morgan had yet another opportunity to level the match just three minutes later when his right footed effort went just wide of the net.

In the 62nd minute, Philadelphia Union defender Finn Sundstrom was issued a yellow card for fouling Javaun Mussenden and impeding a counter attack.

Entering the 65th minute, New England leveled the scoreline.

Midfielder Cristiano Oliveira laid the ball off to defender Gabe Dahlin, who unleashed a rocket into the top-right corner of the net to level the match at 3-3.

In the 68th minute, New England Revolution II midfielder Cristiano Oliveira was issued a yellow card for a harsh foul on Oliver Pratt.

Philadelphia’s next opportunity came just two minutes later when a headed effort from Malik Jakupovic was sent just wide of the goal.

Philadelphia continued to threaten in the 72nd minute when a long-range effort from Kellen LeBlanc was comfortably collected by goalkeeper Max Weinstein.

The Union had a massive chance to regain the lead in the 75th minute when a fast break effort by Kellen LeBlanc was sent over the bar.

In the 77th minute, Philadelphia Union II head coach made two changes by replacing Willyam Ferreira & Oscar Benitez with Sal Olivas & Mamotou Berthé.

Entering the 80th minute, New England were awarded a penalty kick.

Forward Myles Morgan stepped up and blasted it toward the bottom left corner, however, it was saved by goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook to keep the scoreline level at 3-3.

Entering the 84th minute, Philadelphia regained the lead.

Following a shot an initial shot by Stas Korzeniowski it was blocked and then he recovered his own shot and slotted it into the top right corner to give Philadelphia the 4-3 advantage.

New England had a chance to answer back just two minutes later when an effort into the box was deflected away for a corner kick.

In the 88th minute, New England Revolution II midfielder Javaun Mussenden was issued a yellow card.

Following the challenge, Revolution II head coach Pablo Morreira made two changes by replacing Levi Katsell & Matthew Jean Baptise with Shuma Sasaki & Sharod George.

New England had two massive chances to level the scoreline in the 90+2 minute when an effort by Cristiano Oliveira & Myles Morgan were both blocked away & cleared.

After the 90+6 minutes, the match concluded with Philadelphia Union II holding on for the 4-3 victory.
