Gotham extend unbeaten streak, lead in the table with win over Current

Gotham FC 2-1 Kansas City Current

HARRISON, NJ–Gotham FC extended their unbeaten streak to eight and extended their lead at the top of the NWSL table to seven points heading into Saturday’s action as they came from behind to defeat Kansas City Current, 2-1, at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Gotham had to overcome a first minute goal in this one. Croix Bethune sent a long thru ball to Amelia White who got in behind the defense and beat an oncoming Ann-Karin Berger to put the Current ahead after just 23 seconds. Gotham would soon equalize on 13 minutes after Jaedyn Shaw’s free kick fell to the feet of Midge Purce from point blank range.

Haley Hopkins nearly restored the Current’s lead, but Berger would make the save. The Current almost found themselves down a woman in the 27th minute when Elizabeth Ball was shown red for an incident in the Gotham box, but VAR later overturned the decision.

The Current could not overturn Gotham’s go-ahead goal in the 41st minute as Shaw sent a low cross to Sam Kerr for an easy finish and the latter’s first goal since returning the to NWSL. Gotham later had a third chalked off in the 55th minute after it was determined Kerr was in an offside position while screening Marisa Jordan.

In the end, Gotham did not need that insurance goal as they held on for the victory. Gotham will travel to Angel City on Sunday, August 23rd (8pm ET, NWSL+), while Kansas City, who fall to seventh in the table, next Saturday return home against Seattle Reign (5:30pm CT, Ion).
