US World Cup squad formally announced

NEW YORK, NY–At Pier 17 in New York City, the formal announcement of the 26-man roster for the US Men’s World Cup squad was made. Previous reports had leaked the roster on Friday, but this was the official announcement.

All three goalkeeper selected come from Major League Soccer:  Matt Turner of New England Revolution, Matt Friese of New York City FC, and Chris Brady of Chicago Fire FC. Brady becomes the fifth Fire player to be named to a World Cup squad after Jorge Campos (1998, Mexico), Josh Wolff (2002, USA), DaMarcus Beasley (2002, USA), and Xherdan Shaquiri (2022, Switzerland).

There are eight players in total from MLS clubs–three defenders and two midfielders. The defenders are Max Arfsten of Columbus Crew, Tim Ream of Charlotte FC, and Antonee Robinson of FC Cincinnati. Sebastian Berhalter of Vancouver Whitecaps and Cristian Roldan of Seattle Sounders FC are the midfielders.

As far as European-based players go, Gio Reyna will go to his second World Cup and will be looking to make more of an impact. Christian Pulisic will look to rediscover his form after a disappointing year at AC Milan. There are questions about Chris Richards’s health as he is a question mark for Wednesday’s Conference League Final for Crystal Palace against Rayo Vallecano. Tyler Adams is recovering from injury himself and hopes to lead the USA into the World Cup.

The USA will have two warmups against Senegal on May 31st in Charlotte (2:30pm CT, TBS/HBO Max/Telemundo/Peacock) and versus Germany at Soldier Field in Chicago on June 6th (1:30pm CT, TBS/HBO Max/Telemundo/Peacock).
