CHICAGO, IL–Chicago Fire FC appears to be making a change a center back. Joe Chatz at On Tap Sports Net is reporting that defender Carlos Teran is set to join second tier Brazilian side Atletico Paranaense while bringing in Joel Waterman of CF Montreal. Should this be confirmed, Teran will be leaving the Fire after five seasons with the club.
Teran made 87 appearance for the Fire and 69 starts, but his last couple seasons were riddled with injury. Teran would score five goals in his time with the Fire, the most recent being two weeks ago against LAFC. Terán came to the Fire’s downtown training center this morning to say goodbye to teammates and staff and left the facility shortly before the start of first team training according to MIR97 Media.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Fire acquired an international slot from St. Louis City SC in exchange for $150,000 of General Allocation Money (GAM).
Sources confirmed to On Tap Sports Net that the Fire will receive Waterman in exchange for $500,000 in GAM over two years ($200,000 in 2025 and $300,000 in 2026) earlier on Tuesday. If Waterman starts more than 60% of the Fire’s matches in 2026, Chicago will pay Montréal an additional $50,000 in GAM. The Fire will also pay Montréal $50,000 in GAM if Waterman is still on the roster in 2027. Montréal will also be covering a portion of Waterman’s salary.
Waterman, 29, has played the last five seasons at CF Montreal making 130 appearances and had signed an extension with Montreal last November that was set to go thru 2027. He also has earned ten caps for Canada. Since he is a Canadian playing on an American side, he will fill an international roster slot.
