Gazdag Scores Dramatic Late Winner as Revolution Edge NYCFC, 2-1

FOXBOROUGH, MA –New England Revolution (12-4-8, 40 pts.) were victorious 2-1 over versus New York City FC (7-8-8, 29 pts.) on Wednesday night.

The match kicked off at 8:00 p.m. ET at Citi Field to a crowd of 3,000.

New England opened the match on the front foot, quickly looking to advance the ball and apply pressure in New York City FC’s defensive third.

Nicolás Fernández generated the first opportunity of the match in the second minute, but his long-range effort sailed just wide of the right post.

NYCFC appeared to take the lead in the fourth minute when Bénie Traoré found the back of the net. However, Agustín Ojeda was ruled offside in the buildup, wiping away the goal and keeping the match scoreless.

Aiden O’Neill threatened again for New York in the seventh minute, sending a half-volley over the crossbar.

New England earned a penalty kick in the 11th minute after Jack Harrison’s service into the penalty area struck the hand of an NYCFC defender.

Captain Carles Gil stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted his penalty into the bottom-right corner past goalkeeper Matt Freese, giving the Revolution a 1-0 lead.

New York City FC looked for an immediate response and threatened in the 15th minute when Bénie Traoré connected with a cross inside the penalty area, but goalkeeper Matt Turner was positioned well to make the save.

In the 17th minute, Revolution midfielder Alhassan Yusuf was shown a yellow card following a hard challenge on Aiden O’Neill.

Just two minutes later, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović made his first substitution of the match, replacing Yusuf with Jackson Yueill in the 19th minute.

NYCFC continued searching for an equalizer and created another opportunity in the 25th minute, but Mamadou Fofana rose to head away a dangerous service into the penalty area before New York could capitalize.

In the 31st minute, Revolution defender Matt Polster was shown a yellow card for a foul on Nicolás Fernández near midfield.

Fernández generated New York City FC’s next opportunity in the 40th minute, but his left-footed effort toward goal was deflected behind for a corner kick.

NYCFC continued to pile on the pressure less than a minute later when James Sands attempted to deliver a cutback into the penalty area, only for Dor Turgeman to make a sliding defensive block and send the ball behind for another corner.

New York produced its best opportunity of the half from the ensuing corner, as Mitja Ilenič collected the ball and fired a left-footed effort just over the crossbar.

After 45 minutes and five minutes of first-half stoppage time, the halftime whistle sounded with New England holding a 1-0 advantage.

New York City FC opened the second half on the front foot, quickly looking to advance the ball and apply pressure in New England’s defensive third.

NYCFC generated the first opportunity of the second half in the 50th minute when Mitja Ilenič fired an effort toward goal that was comfortably handled by goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Less than a minute later, Turner was called into action again, denying Agustín Ojeda’s effort and pushing the ball behind for a corner kick.

New England responded with a dangerous opportunity of its own in the 54th minute when Peyton Miller delivered a cutback toward Dor Turgeman inside the penalty area, but Raul Gustavo intervened to deflect the service behind for a corner.

The Revolution came close to doubling their advantage in the 58th minute when Jackson Yueill connected with a header from close range, forcing goalkeeper Matt Freese into a crucial save.

New England continued to threaten in the attacking third in the 60th minute when Matt Polster fired an effort from the top of the penalty area that narrowly missed wide of the left post.

Less than a minute later, Jack Harrison curled a left-footed effort toward goal, but Freese was positioned well to make the save.

In the 63rd minute, NYCFC head coach Mehdi Ballouchy made his first two substitutions of the match, replacing Agustín Ojeda and Aiden O’Neill with Luighi and Hannes Wolf.

New York City FC had a massive opportunity to level the match in the 65th minute when Bénie Traoré delivered a cross toward Luighi inside the six-yard box. Ethan Kohler intervened from close range, clearing the ball into the stands for a corner kick before Luighi could connect.

Matt Turner came up with another crucial save for New England in the 68th minute, getting down to deny Hannes Wolf’s low effort toward the bottom corner and preserve the Revolution’s one-goal advantage.

Entering the 72nd minute, NYCFC leveled the scoreline.

New York City FC found the equalizer following an attack down the right flank, as Hannes Wolf delivered a cross into the penalty area that found Luighi from close range. The forward converted to level the match at 1-1.

Following the goal, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović responded with two substitutions, replacing Matt Polster and Dor Turgeman with Ilay Feingold and Dániel Gazdag.

Peyton Miller had the next chance for New England in the 77th minute when his side-volleyed effort was sent high into the air and claimed by goalkeeper Matt Freese.

In the 80th minute, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović made two more changes, replacing Peyton Miller & Jack Harrison with Luca Langoni & Wilson Harris.

Entering the 84th minute, New England thought it had regained the lead when a ball played into the penalty area deflected off an NYCFC player before Dániel Gazdag finished from close range. However, Gazdag was ruled offside, wiping away the goal and keeping the match level at 1-1.

Less than a minute later, Bénie Traoré threatened at the opposite end, but his effort toward goal was deflected behind for a corner kick. New England successfully dealt with the ensuing set piece to keep the score level.

In the 88th minute, NYCFC head coach Mehdi Ballouchy made his third substitution of the match, replacing Traoré with Malachi Jones.

New England finally found its breakthrough in the second minute of stoppage time.

Ilay Feingold delivered a service into the penalty area that Gazdag controlled with his chest before burying his effort into the back of the net, giving the Revolution a dramatic 2-1 lead in the 90+2nd minute.

Following the goal, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović made his final substitution of the match, replacing Will Sands with Tanner Beason as New England looked to see out the remaining minutes.

After 90 minutes and four minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle sounded as the Revolution held on for a dramatic 2-1 road victory over New York City FC.
