JULY 19, 2025 - PORTLAND, OR: MLS Regular Season Match between Portland Timbers and Minnesota United at Providence Park (Photo by Diego G Diaz).
Portland celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with MLS’s biggest ever tifo, fireworks, and the presentation of their voted all time 11. Everybody came to Providence Park to celebrate its history and deepen the bond between fans, city, club, past players, ring of honor and 2015 cup winners, and also pay honor to those who aren’t physically on this earth but in the memories of all, still haunt the mystic grounds of the Portland Timbers.
The historical milestone was bigger than the game as it was the case for the Wednesday evening bout against Real Salt Lake. On Saturday night, Minnesota United also came with the full intentions of ruining the party, and almost got away with it, but in pure Timbers old school stoppage time style drama, Omir Fernández scored his first ever goal to equalize two minutes past regulation.
Fernández’s goal gave the stadium the celebration they were holding out all week. Portland scored motivated by pride, but the fighting spirit that got the Timbers to keep a point at home, might have been what they showed was what the fans wanted to see absent the quality football, that they are missing during their star midfielder, David Costa’s, absence due to injury.
