Australia to play three tests in West Indies on 2025 tour

Australia will play three test matches rather than the anticpated two when they tour the West Indies in the summer of 2025.

The matches will be the first to be counted for the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle in 2025-27 seasons.

Cricket Australia (CA) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) met and agreed to add the extra Test to the schedule. It will be the first three match Test series between the two sides since 2015.

The sides play for the Frank Worrell Trophy and the Antipodeans have held it for 30 years, having won 11 and drawn twp of the last 13 series.

Nick Hockley, the chief executive of Cricket Australia (CA) told ESPNCricInfo:

“I am really glad that is going to manifest. We’re still waiting for an official announcement from the West Indies Cricket Board around precise dates and precise locations but it will be a three-Test series.

“It’s another great opportunity. The World Test Championship prescribed that we needed to play two, at least two. But really, for the fans and for the players, you don’t want to be stuck in the position when it’s one-one and everyone is feeling unsatisfied.”

Australia won the 2015 series 2-0 with a drawn match in Adelaide, winnig a lopsided five game ODI series by 4-0. Chris Gayle won Player of the Series for his 346 runs.

Richie Richardson and Allan Border were the skippers in 1993/93 when the West Indies won a five match series 2-1. David Boon top socred with 490, beating Brian Lara by 24 runs. Curtley Ambrose took 33 wickets and the Player of the Series Award.

Barbados, Grenada and Jamaica are the most likely locations for the three matches which are expected to take place from late June.

On the current Future Tours Programme, the schedule also includes three ODIs and three T20 matches.
