Oscar Trejo – La Liga Player of the Week

Oscar Trejo’s stunning first-half display was enough to secure Rayo Vallecano’s first win of the season as they beat Granada 4-0.

The Argentine’s goal and two assists gave the newly-promoted side a three-goal lead before half-time and Santi Comesana finished the job in the second half.

Trejo’s first assist came in the third minute as he played the ball out to his midfield partner Alvaro Garcia, whose quick feet and dribbling created some room to shoot. His deflected effort looped over the goalkeeper and gave Vallecano an early lead.

Randy Nteka then won a penalty in the 23rd minute as he jinked past Domingos Duarte, who then clattered into the legs of Nteka. Trejo scored his first goal of the season as his unstoppable spot-kick crashed in off the left post.

The 33-yeard-old then repaid Nteka for his help in winning the penalty by providing an assist for the striker minutes before the half-time whistle. Trejo flicked on a long ball onto Nteka and the Frenchman showed brilliant ball control to take the ball down and finish powerfully from the edge of the box.

Vallecano have been tipped as one of the favourites for relegation back to La Liga Smartbank. After spending two seasons in the second division, Los Franjirrojos won promotion through the playoffs with Trejo scoring five goals in the process. he also tied Edgar Gonzalez for most yellow cards in a single season as he was booked 17 times.

So far this season, the midfielder has averaged 84% passing accuracy and 71% tackle success. The attacking presence of Trejo along with Nteka and Garcia will be pivotal for Vallecano’s season due to their defensive liabilities. During their last spell in the top division, the side conceded more goals than any other team (70) on their way to finishing bottom

Rayo Vallecano’s first game after the international break will be against Levante, who have had an interesting start to the season. Although they are still waiting for their first win, an impressive 3-3 draw against Real Madrid showed how dangerous they can truly be.
