Swansea’s late fightback earns point against unlucky Wycombe

Late goals from Jamal Lowe and Liam Cullen earned Swansea a point at the Liberty Stadium.

This was after strikes from Admiral Muskwe and Garath McCleary gave Wycombe a shock lead in South Wales.

The game began on an even keel, with sides exchanging corners before Swansea’s talisman Andre Ayew was taken off injured within ten minutes.

A mistake from Jack Grimmer gifted Swansea their first chance through Connor Roberts. The wing-back pounced in a central position. His finish was that of a full-back though, and it was easy for Stockdale to tip wide.

Conor Hourihane fired wide from range minutes later, but this was the peak of Swans’ dominance in the opening half.

Wycombe should have had an opportunity to take the lead when Leicester loanee Admiral Muskwe fired in at Freddie Woodman’s goal. The ball was blocked, but replays later found it struck the arm of Matt Grimes in an unnatural position.

The Chairboys built on the misfortune, beginning to dominate opportunities. Curtis Thompson was a regular outlet, and he found Dennis Adeniran who sliced wide of Woodman’s left corner.

Gareth Ainsworth’s men used their end of half momentum extremely effectively – and almost immediately – in the second period.

Within 15 seconds, they took a deserved lead when Muskwe fired home a sumptuous volley from outside the area. He struck sweetly with his right leaving Woodman no chance at his near post.

Minutes later, they would consolidate the lead through veteran Garath McCleary.

The former Reading man cut inside from the left-hand side after constant Wycombe pressure, slamming home in the same corner to double the Chairboys’ lead.

Steve Cooper responded with a triple change, with Morgan Whittaker, Korey Smith and Yan Dhanda were drafted on, but failed to make any real impact immediately.

With ten to go, the game seemed to be dying out – but out of nowhere, Swansea won a penalty for handball against Grimmer.

Jamal Lowe blasted home with consummate ease, and all of a sudden, the Wycombe camp began emitting nerves not seen in the comfortable 80 minutes prior.

Swansea’s final substitution involved a painful ‘sub-for-sub’ for Wayne Routledge – but the man coming on, youngster Liam Cullen, would prove pivotal.

Just a few minutes after Lowe pulled one back, he rose highest at the back post to nod in Swansea’s leveller. In what seemed like an eventual dead rubber, Swans had risen from obscurity.

All-in-all, it was your typical backs to the wall, physical, end-to-end Championship match that makes the league what it is. A fair result in the end.
