England make one change for second Test in Galle

England have made just one change for the second Test in Galle which gets underway in Galle tomorrow morning as James Anderson replaces Stuart Broad in the side.

Joe Root and the coaching staff have elected against making wholesale changes in the bowling line up with many expecting Mark Wood to make way for one of Chris Woakes or Olly Stone but the tourists have largely stuck with the same side.

The returning Jonny Bairstow and debutant Dan Lawrence both impressed in the first match of the series so keep their places as do spin pair Jack Leach and Dom Bess who both took fifers in the opening match of the series.

England will be keen to secure victory in the second Test, knowing they will have a much more difficult series to come next month in India.

Openers Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley struggled in the first match, making just a combined 23 runs but Root has backed the pair to respond in the second Test, when speaking to Test Match Special.

“They are two very smart players that will make sure they will give a good account of themselves in this second game,” said Root. “They have certainly done everything possible to do so in practice.

“They are two very fast learners; they are two people who have overcome some difficulties in their very short careers.”
