Jamaica race to top of Group C in CONCACAF Gold Cup

Jamaica got off to great start in their opening match in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, beating Honduras 3-2 in the country’s capital Kingston.

Dever Orgill scored two goals in the first half for Jamaica to give them a comfortable lead at the interval. Honduras got one back early in the second half through striker Antony Lozano before Jamaica regained their two-goal advantage with a goal in the 56th minute from striker Damion Lowe.

Honduras did get a late consolation goal in the 90th minute from substitute Rubilio Castillo.

The Reggae Boyz made the most of their home advantage as the tournament used a venue in the Caribbean for the first time. The Jamaican National Stadium is probably more famous in the sporting world for being home to the Jamaican Olympic Athletics team, which has dominated the sprint competitions in recent years.

Jamaica will face a tough test in their next match in the Gold Cup when they travel to Houston for Friday’s match against El Salvador, who are just behind Jamaica in Group C on goal difference.

Earlier in the day El Salvador defeated Curaçao 1-0 thanks to a goal just before half time from Bangkok United’s striker Nelson Bonilla.
