Julen Lopetegui given chance for redemption in La Liga with Sevilla

Julen Lopetegui has been announced as the new manager of La Liga side Sevilla, his first job since his sacking back in 2018 from Real Madrid.

The Spaniard has been handed a three-year deal with the Spanish side who finished 6th.

Last season the 52-year-old started off the campaign with Real Madrid, following being sacked by the Spanish national side two days before the World Cup.

Due to Spanish Football Federation believing he would have a conflict of interest, he was immediately dismissed. They were knocked out in the round of 16 by hosts Russia.

During his four and a half month stay with the Madrid club he won 6 of his 14 games, as the Spanish giants struggled without their former boss Zinedine Zidane and star player Cristiano Ronaldo.

He was sacked in October following a humiliating 5-1 defeat to rivals FC Barcelona, a loss that put them in ninth, leaving Real seven points between them and their title rivals.

Sevilla had been in search of a manager after caretaker boss Joaquin Caparros departed the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium after gaining qualification for next season’s Europa League.

Caparros may have stayed on if he hadn’t been diagnosed with chronic leukaemia, which left him in a difficult position as he couldn’t continue.

The previously former Spain boss managed FC Porto where he gained great acclaim and was top of sporting director Mochi’s target list for the new boss at Sevilla.
