Tottenham vs Huddersfield preview: Spurs could jump into third

Tottenham look to boost their Champions League hopes by condemning already relegated Huddersfield Town to another defeat.

Victory would see the Lilywhites rise to third at least temporarily whilst points only represent pride and maybe some extra money for Huddersfield, who could overtake Fulham into 19th should they claim all three points.

The home side overturn Manchester City in their new stadium on Tuesday and hope to make it three out of three since their return to N17. That result was slightly marred by an injury to Harry Kane which could see the England captain out until the end of the season.

Kane is joined on the sidelines by Dele Alli, who broke his hand in two places during the win over City, Serge Aurier (hamstring), Erik Lamela (hamstring), Eric Dier (hip) and Vincent Janssen (ankle).

The visitors Huddersfield’s fate was sealed in defeat to Crystal Palace at the end of March and will be hopeful of stopping a run of 18 defeats in their last 20 matches. They have also gained only one point in their last ten away matches in the Premier League, Cardiff City the only team failing to emerge victorious over the Terriers.

The German boss has confirmed that Ben Hamer will start in goal as he begins to utilise his squad options ahead of next season’s Championship campaign whilst Isaac Mbenza (illness), Demeaco Duhaney (hip) and Laurent Depoitre (hip) are all doubts for the match.

The three Premier League meetings between these sides has finished with an aggregate score of 8-0 in Tottenham’s favour with Saturday’s visitors only mustering nine shots on target.

Jan Siewert’s Huddersfield have also struggled against all of the top six, losing their last ten in a row. Therefore, the statistics point towards a Tottenham victory in this fixture as Mauricio Pochettino’s team look for momentum heading into a huge midweek Champions League quarter-final second leg clash with Manchester City.

Despite Pochettino’s side winning just once in their last six Premier League games, a 2-0 victory last time out against Crystal Palace, the Argentine will be confident of securing a precious three points in their quest for Champions League football next season.
