Bundesliga Matchday 25: The one where Bayern retook the lead

Bayern Munich running amok, Dortmund keeping pace, relegation saving points. This was Bundesliga Matchday 25.

Bayern Munich had their hands full knowing that Liverpool was up next. They weren’t distracted to put in a thrashing of Wolfsburg, 6-0.

Goals for Bayern came from all around which bodes badly for Liverpool FC. Five goal scorers for Bayern including Robert Lewandowski with a brace and a goal each from Serge Gnabry, James Rodriguez, Thomas Huller, and Joshua Kimmich. The sharing of the wealth means that the reigning champions will be ready to take on their second leg of the Champions League with gusto.

BVB has been on a slide of late, but everything tends to get solved when you play a relegation team. Stuttgart lived up to billing conceding defeat to Dortmund, 3-1.

Dortmund was a bit unable to find the go-ahead goal in the first half, but the second half was different. A goal from captain Marco Reus broke the deadlock but it was short lived as Marc-Oliver Kempf found an equalizer. It wasn’t long, though, before Paco Alcacer and Christian Pulisic found goals to get BVB a clear advantage.

Werder Bremen has been an up-and-down team and thought they’d pull one over Schalke. Fact is everyone is these days as Bremen came away 4-2 winners.

Bremen has been chasing the European pack, but has been making waves of late. Piling on the goals as they did vs. Schalke is a sign they are looking to keep up especially with the April cup quarterfinal between these two clubs coming up. Schalke did themselves no favors in the lead up to their Champions League Round of 16 second leg with Manchester City as they looked hopeless in defense.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

RB Leipzig was held to a 0-0 result home to Augsburg. The Bavarians will see this as a major result in relegation survival.

SC Freiburg continued their fine home form as they defeated Hertha Berlin 2-1. Freiburg can consider themselves officially out of the yearly relegation scrap.

Borussia Monchengladbach was able to rebound from last week’s humiliation with a 1-0 road win over Mainz. They pulled level with Leipzig on points for third.

Hoffenheim has been missing victory for some time, but against nearly relegated Nurnberg, they finally found their break through victory in a 2-1 win.

Through the blinding snow, Hannover made a good try of it as they fell to Bayer Leverkusen, 3-2.

In the Monday match, Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Fortuna Dusseldorf, 3-0, thanks to two goals by Sebastien Haller in stoppage time and that result pulls the Eagles to within three points of Leipzig and Gladbach for a Champions League place next season.

Prost Bundesliga Player of the Week:  It should be no surprise that it’s Robert Lewandowski of Bayern with two more goals to make him the all-time leading scorer among non-Germans in the Bundesliga.
