Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero has landed the Premier League player of the month award for February, an award the Argentinian has received for a record-equalling sixth for the striker.
Tottenham’s Jürgen Klinsmann was the first ever recipient of the award back in August 1994. The 30-year-old Argentine becomes only the third player to receive the award six times, following on from Harry Kane and Steven Gerrard.
The City striker played in all four Premier League matches as the Citizens came away with all 12 points, beating Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea and West Ham. Agüero scored seven goals during those matches including a hat-trick against top six teams Arsenal and Chelsea.
In winning the award the striker saw off competition from Manchester United duo Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw, as well as Liverpool players Sadio Mané and Virgil van Dijk. Newcastle youngster Sean Longstaff was also was nominated after a breakthrough month.
This month has also seen the City marksman equal Newcastle and Blackburn legend Alan Shearer’s hat-trick record of 11 in the English top flight.
After ending the month with the winning goal against the Hammers, Agüero became the top scorer in the league with 18, one ahead of Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah and two clear of Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
Since the start of the month, City have made clear strides in maintaining their hopes of winning the quadruple, lifting the Carabao Cup and leapfrogging Liverpool to top spot in the Premier League.
Boss Pep Guardiola also won the manager of the month award, picking up his first of the season. The goal of the month went to Newcastle defender Fabian Schär for his long-range goal in their relegation six-pointer with Burnley.
