Martial and Lingard could return against Liverpool

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard could both return from injury to face Liverpool on Sunday according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Manchester United duo had to be withdrawn early from their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on February 12 with the fears both would miss to critical clash at Old Trafford.

Lingard suffered an apparent hamstring problem while Martial looked to be suffering from a thigh problem, however both have made speedy recoveries.

Speaking to the media ahead of Sunday’s game the United interim manager said:

“I hope Jesse will be okay. I more hope than think Anthony will be okay.

“They have got to get through these two sessions, they have not been part of it [training]yet. They have been doing some recovery work.”

Victory on Sunday would see the Red Devils strengthen their grip on fourth in the Premier League – having been 11 points adrift of the Champions League places when the Norwegian took over in December.

A win would also see Solskjaer add Liverpool to his list of top six scalps during his tenure having already defeated Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Solskjaer is aware of the challenge ahead and knows his team will have to improve from their European defeat:

“We have to perform better than we did against PSG,” he said.

“It’s a big game, a big team. We have got to learn from that experience. We have go to stay focused for the whole game.”

Defeating Liverpool would be the former United striker’s 12th win in 14 matches.
