Wagner leaves Huddersfield Town

David Wagner has left his role as Huddersfield Town Head Coach by mutual consent.

The 47-year-old, who took over in November 2015, oversaw the Terrier’s unlikely rise to the Premier League with a penalty shootout victory over Reading in the playoff final and kept the Yorkshire outfit up in their first season back in the top flight of English football since 1972.

A statement from Huddersfield Chairman Dean Hoyle said:

“I’d like to begin by thanking David for all he has achieved at Huddersfield Town over the last three-and-a-half years. Under his stewardship, we’ve achieved things on the football pitch that surpass anything in modern memory, and that have gone well beyond my wildest expectations as a Chairman and as a fan.” The statement read.

Hoyle also paid the now former Huddersfield boss a great compliment comparing his achievements to some of the greats of football,

“His achievements will rightly put him up there in Huddersfield Town history alongside great names like Herbert Chapman and Mick Buxton; legendary managers who changed the face of this club,” Said Hoyle via the statement released on the club website.

“As I had said previously, I had no intention of sacking David this season. Subsequently David – being the great man he is – came to us and made it clear that he needs a break from the rigours of football management.”

Mark Hudson will take this weekend’s Premier League clash against Manchester City with the club facing a gauntlet in their next four games. After taking on Pep Guardiola’s men, Huddersfield have games against Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The Terriers currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League on 11 points, eight points from safety, having picked up just two wins all season. A 1-0 victory over Fulham and a 2-0 triumph against Wolves. Both came in November.
