Bundesliga Matchday 16 Review: The One Where Dortmund Lost

The undefeated finally lose, title chasers catch up, and we have a relegation scrap in the Bundesliga Matchday 16.

Borussia Dortmund went seven months and fifteen league matches since their 3-1 loss at Hoffenheim in May, but in their visit to Dusseldorf they found out they are susceptible to defeat, 2-1 to Fortuna.

This season, Fortuna Dusseldorf has pulled results off at home. It has been four victories with three total points on the road so far, so Borussia Dortmund knew this would be tough. Thing was, Fortuna made themselves difficult to break down and hit the long ball to find a goal, and they found two of them in Dodi Lukebakio and Jean Zimmer. This will be a result they won’t soon forget.

Bayern Munich faced off with fellow Champions League chasing RB Leipzig in a match that would determine if they have turned the corner. Test is finished and Bayern came out luckier than an Irishman on St. Patrick’s Day in a 1-0 home victory.

In very few matches do the Munich crowd as a whole get up for it from beginning to end. Dortmund is one and of late so is the match home to Leipzig. Bayern won the day due to more individual skill that was out on the pitch and sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. For Leipzig, they will know that they were the better team, but unless you win the match you won’t be known for being the better team nine times out of ten.

In the battle of the disappointing sides, Schalke now looks to be more lost than ever with their 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen is weird like smelly cheese. They will look like world beaters, then they drop a smelly egg. Each side has been a big disappointment in the Bundesliga despite reaching the knockout phases of the respective UEFA competitions. Bayer got 10 minutes of magic as they put two first half goals in to take an insurmountable lead. Internationally, it’s the Schalke goal that will have more impact as the American connection of Weston McKinney and Haji Wright connected to score a consolation goal.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

In Mainz, the first edition of the Rhein Main derby was played, an exciting 2-2 draw as both Luka Jovic and Robin Quaison scored braces for their respective teams.

Hoffenheim played out a 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen. If Hoffenheim in this five-match run of just draws turned them all to wins, they’d be in second place at present time.

Borussia Monchengladbach played their part in a 2-0 win over Nurnberg to send the Franconians to the bottom of the league. Sets up a massive match for Friday.

Hertha Berlin played a 2-2 draw with FC Augsburg and yet that will not be enough for either team as they are not keeping up with the European race or escaping the relegation tussel.

Wolfsburg is surprisingly back in the European races as they vanquished Stuttgart 2-0 and kept the Swabian’s in the relegation fight.

In the ‘If a tree falls in the Forest’ match between Freiburg and Hannover the 1-1 draw benefits Hannover more than Freiburg as each try to escape the relegation fight.
